My story

[p]We’re raising money for four great causes. [/p][p]Two years ago I turned 50, hit 22 stone on the scales and was being medicated for Type 2 diabetes. I’d spent most of the last 20 years sat in the House of Commons and I hardly spent any time outdoors, let alone starting physical activity. I realised I had to change my life so I took up exercise and transformed my diet. I’m now 7 stone lighter, have put my Type 2 diabetes in remission and feel the best I ever have.[/p][p]This year I want to go further and encourage other people struggling with their weight, or just wanting to lead a healthier lifestyle, to join in with me.[/p][p]That’s why over the next 6 months, working with the members of the Outdoor Industries Association, I’m taking part in a series of outdoor ‘Adventures 4 Health’ in which I’ll be:[/p][p]1 - Climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales[/p][p]2 - Canoeing the canals of the Black Country[/p][p]3 - Cycling 50 miles around London[/p][p]4 - Swimming the Serpentine [/p][p]Though I’m fitter now than I’ve been for years I still think of myself as an overweight middle-aged bloke, and these physical challenges are definitely daunting. I hope by taking part I’ll show other people who are worried about their weight, or just want to get healthier and more active, how accessible outdoor activities can be. And some of my friends are doing this with me.[/p][p]Along the way we will raise money for four fantastic causes: [/p][p]JK Rowling's [url=]Lumos[/url] charity, [/p][p]the [url=]Cystic Fibrosis Trust[/url], [/p][p][url=]The Albion Foundation[/url] [/p][p][url=]SpecialEffect[/url].[/p][p]I’ll also be using the year to consult and devise a plan that could be adopted by government to help everyone in our country, young and old, to keep physically active. That’s why I don’t want to just talk the talk, I want to walk the walk, paddle the canoe and peddle the bike. [/p][p]Why not join me even for only one of the challenges?
