My story

[p]On Sunday 23rd June at 12 noon I will be joining Jane Austen’s family and the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation team to retrace Jane's steps from her cottage in the middle of Chawton village to Chawton House, her brother's Hampshire home. Jane visited Chawton House frequently and enjoyed access to her brother's library during the most productive years of her writing career.[/p][p]I will be joining the Jane Austen Parade for Literacy to recognise the contribution that education and access to libraries made to Jane Austen's life, works and legacy, and to raise money for literacy.[/p][p]The money raised by the Jane Austen Parade for Literacy will be used to fund five public daycare centers, called Anganwadi, in Delhi, to participate in the Worldreader India Read to Kids programme. . The schools will be provided with tablets, e-library access, suppport and literacy resources to storify their classroom for better engagement, participation and learning outcomes. These resources will be implemented on the ground by Worldreader working together with the Department of Woman and Child Development in India.[/p][p]Marilyn and I were in Delhi last year and saw some of the poverty, children in Delhi, are suffering. Education is much prized. Learning to use language and being able to communicate effectively, is a powerful aid to progress.[/p][p]In the past twelve months I have been supporting the Jane Austen Foundation as a literacy mentor, reading children's writing and giving them encouragement. Michael Grant - your brother

The children will benefit greatly. I remember my visits to Delhi and Calcutta (now Kolikat). I saw poverty that we in the West can't imagane. India though is very wealthy. Hindusim holds down the poor - "it's their karma", I was told. ****!
