My story

[p]I’ve never been a natural runner in fact at so many points in my life I’ve hated(!!!) running but I’ve finally come to accept our love, hate relationship and now its got me running London 2019....ahhh!![/p][p]I entered the ballot never actually thinking I’d get a slot but here I am, one of the lucky 17000. Being in the ballot I’m not tied to raising money for charity but, in my mind, how could I not use this amazing opportunity as a way of raising both awareness and money for charity.[/p][p]I wanted to run for a chairty that would give me an extra kick out the door on the freezing winter mornings, to help me rack up those miles and eventually get me over the 26.2 mile point and I’ve now got two! Little Troopers and Little Hearts Matter.....stay in touch with this page to hear about the amazing work they do and how the money I raise will benefit them. [/p][p]Thank you for taking the time to read this, hopefully you’ll stay with me throughout my marathon journey.[/p][p]LITTLE HEARTS MATTER:[/p][p]Louie Hawkins....to look at this little boy he is just the same as every other boy his age. He loves singing and dancing, loves riding on his bike and playing with his mates. But to his family and friends he is a real life superhero, a champion, a fighter. To me he was born with the heart and soul of a warrior and is my inspiration.[/p][p]This is his story in the words of his mum, my friend Annika: [/p][p]It was the worst day of my life.... the day I nearly lost my baby boy! At 9 days old Louie went pale, blue and floppy in my arms. Beside myself with fear worry we rushed him to hospital. He deteriorated very quickly and within minutes he was in complete organ failure. Every doctor and medical staff on duty that night were present fighting to save his life. [/p][p]Then came the devastation of the diagnosis ..... Hypo plastic left heart syndrome. A congenital heart condition that has changed our families life forever!!![/p][p]Louie was stabilised and a miracle team from Bristol were blue lighted to Exeter to transfer him to Bristol children’s hospital. [/p][p]Louie had taken a huge hit, to the body survival was unknown.....we were the parents everyone looked at with sad faces. Louie’s tiny body fought back and showed some positive signs of recovery; the surgeon, after 7 days, made the incredibly brave decision to operate.[/p][p]Louie had 3 open heart surgeries in just 5 years of his life, the Norwood procedure, the Glen shunt and the Fontan completion. Surgery was our only option to keep Louie alive however this surgery is not corrective and is only palliative. [/p][p]Louie lives with continuous scans, appointments, blood tests, medication to keep him alive and severe limitations to his physical abilities and the uncertainty of life expectancy. [/p][p]Despite this Louie lives a full, happy life, is full of fighting spirit. He is able to do this with the help of all his loving family, friends, his medical team and the support of wonderful charities such as LITTLE HEARTS MATTER! [/p][p]This charity specifically helps children with single ventricular heart conditions, with anything from insurance for holidays, form filling, school issues, simplifying the complexity of the condition in order to help those around the children understand their needs and sharing positive stories of all the children living with this disease. [/p][p]Without them life would be a lot harder![/p][p]Without all the Louie’s in this world life would be impossible![/p][p]LITTLE TROOPERS • The other charity I’m running the marathon for is Little Troopers. As a serving Mum and Military wife this charity really hit home with me. [/p][p]I’ve been lucky, so far, to not have to deploy whilst being a Mum, although I have been on courses since, my longest being 10 wks...there is nothing like missing your children. The hardest thing I’ve experienced was watching William miss Jay whilst he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2015, he was only 1 and wasn’t speaking; one morning I walked into his room and found him stood sucking his thumb looking at a photo of him and his Daddy, I was so overwhelmed with sadness for him. He didn’t understand where he had gone, how do you begin to tell someone so young.[/p][p]Yes we signed up for it, yes we could leave but if all serving parents left, the British Forces wouldn’t be what they are now![/p][p]There are thousands of military children in all 3 services, Little Troopers supports them all. [/p][p]It is a tiny charity with a big heart, started by Louise who was a soldier herself and wife to a soldier, she saw the impact deployments on her own daughter. Louise recognised there was nothing specific in place to support military children but there was a real need. Little Troopers recognise the unique daily challenges faced by our children and provide various resources to ease and aid those challenges. Separation Packs, story reading app, Little Trooper of the Month, craft activity sheets, Little Troopers at School project, Christmas Smiles, birthday card scheme and so much more is provided for families.[/p][p]Little Troopers has historically struggled to secure funding and continues to survive on donations and fundraising, every single penny counts to enable this vital support to continue for all the Little Troopers out there.[/p][p]As much as we are no longer at war we are still required to deploy on enduring operations, in support of humanitarian aid efforts and on exercises to ensure we are the best in the world. [/p][p]11,000 personnel will be deployed this Christmas with a large proportion of them being Mums and Dads. Help me ease the distance between them and their children and make it a positive experience for them all or just to raise awareness of the resilience and strength in our military children 🇬🇧 [/p]
