Team story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting our page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p]--------------[/p][p]Just a note to thank the offline fundraisers in person - Andy Elliott, Anne Wilson, Jamal Pennant, Sue Exler, Mark Briscoe, Julie Hamilton, Archie Davidson, Jeanette Tim and Ryan - thanks all[/p][p]--------------[/p][p]Hi,[/p][p]Firstly, a big thank you to all of you who sponsored us – as you can see from the link below we have raised over £500 for Grove Scout Group![/p][p]Secondly, and most importantly I now realise why 80% of people don’t make it around the Tour de Trigs![/p][p]This was by far the most physical and mental challenge I have ever attempted in my life. As I sit here writing this I am aching  all over – from the tips of my fingers down through the soles of my feet and everywhere in between – including places I didn’t know could ache![/p][p]We gave this our very best shot, but at 30 miles after 16.5 hours of walking and at 0230hrs in the morning I’m afraid to say enough was enough![/p][p]We had probably walked nearer 35 miles by then as when darkness fell navigation on unfamiliar terrain became nigh on impossible and after looping back twice to find missed checked points, when we realised we had missed one for the third time – enough really was enough – the temptation of the 30 mile checkpoint was too much and we were out.[/p][p]I have never before walked on such horrendous terrain – up hill –down dale – under fence – over fences and what felt like 43,000 styles in various states of disrepair.[/p][p]The organisation was fantastic and the people at each manned checkpoint very accommodating, but the distance, the terrain, the night navigation, the unfamiliarity of the location, the missed checkpoints was too much.  At times it felt like we were up to our knees in unmentionable and some of the fields were in all awful state from the recent rain and others so hard from the frost![/p][p]We never really got above 2.5 miles an hour and the last 4.5 miles took us nearly 4 hours to complete – I usually walk at 3 to 4 miles an hour![/p][p]Still, I think a good time was had by all and without the help of Simon Atkin and Richard Lewis there is no way I would’ve gotten as far as I got! Let me tell all doubters – this was no stroll in the park or sponsored walk around the school field![/p][p]What a way to celebrate turning 40 – we could’ve been in the Elaichi having a curry with all the other Scout Leaders![/p][p]Should I have a mad moment and decide I want to do this again next year – please remind me of how I am feeling right now and then shoot me – silly old fool![/p][p]Still, no one can falter our efforts and I will treasure my woven blanket badge – never has a shower ever felt as good as the one I had at the Warriner School at 0430hrs today – bliss![/p][p]And I never want to see another piece of flapjack as long as I live![/p][p]--------------[/p][p]And that's it then we're off tomorrow - game on![/p][p]--------------[/p][p]Update - 29/11/12 - Now very real - less than 48 hours to go - we can do no more other than pack the bags - 9.56AM Saturday here we come![/p][p]Thanks for all the sponsorship so far! [/p][p]--------------------[/p][p]So you're 39 1/2 years old, it's a nice summer's evening, you're thinking about what do for your 40th in six months time and hey ho there's an article in the Oxford Mail about a 50 mile hike challenge called the Tour De Triggs - sounds like fun you think (over the chilled vino blanco) - better than the usual PARTY! or TRIP TO NEW YORK. [/p][p]Invite a fellow Cub Scout leader - invite a fellow walker (also about to turn 40)... yes they're mad enough! [/p][p]Six months on it's all very real! Under 2 weeks to go - 16 10 mile plus practise walks under my belt - all the kit sorted - game on![/p][p]Slightly worrying when the combined age of the 3 of us is just over 120 and so we qualify as Veterans! How did that happen .. novices more like! [/p]
