My story

[p]I’m delighted to announce that rather fittingly starting on World Suicide Prevention Day - Friday 10th September 2021 at 11:00am, I will be toeing the start line of Ultra-Trail® Snowdonia 165km (103 miles). [/p][p]With 10,000m+ (33,000ft+) elevation gain, on predominantly technical mountain trails. This makes UTS one of, if not THE toughest Ultra-Trail® events in the world. UTS isn’t just challenging for the sake of it though. With routes that explore Snowdonia’s most scenic valleys, rugged peaks and epic landscapes, these race routes are truly the most beautiful in the UK! [/p][p]It’s safe to say this Ultra-Marathon will be by far The most brutal yet beautiful Smilinggg ultra-challenge yet![/p][p]Why? Why am I attempting this challenge?[/p][p]There is a 50-hour time limit cut off on UTS165, statistics show that within these 50-hours, there will be a further 4,500 people worldwide who will have died due to suicide.[/p][p]800,000 people worldwide die due to suicide every year. That’s one person every 40 seconds. There are indications that for every person who died by suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide.[/p][p]In 2018 there were 6,859 suicides in the UK and Republic of Ireland. This saddening statistic shows there has been a significant increase in suicide in the UK, for the first time since 2013. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 and young people aged 16-24. The suicide rate for young females is now at its highest rate on record.[/p][p]Suicide is complex and not caused by one thing. Suicide is preventable and suicidal thoughts are often temporary and can be interrupted. [/p][p]So one of the biggest reasons why I am taking on UTS165 is to raise as much money as possible for Samaritans to carry out their vision and mission:[/p][p]Samaritans Vision is that fewer people die by suicide. They work to achieve this vision by making it their mission to alleviate emotional distress and reduce the incidence of suicide feelings and suicidal behaviour.[/p][p]Samaritans offer tools, resources and services that help people look after their own wellbeing, build resilience and support others. Samaritans is there for anyone struggling to cope. Samaritans vision is that fewer people die by suicide. They believe suicide is preventable. [/p][p]Someone contacts Samaritans every 6 seconds and in the next hour Samaritans will receive over 600 calls from people struggling to cope.[/p][p]By donating to Samaritans, your money helps save lives. It enables Samaritans to be available 24 hours a day to provide emotional support for people who are struggling to cope, including those who have had thoughts of suicide.[/p][p]When you're going through a tough time, Samaritans is here to listen. Whoever you are, whatever you're going through, you don't have to face it alone.[/p][p]Secondly, it's to raise awareness of Smilinggg and The Smilinggg Mile.[/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/o5w3lMejRE0?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p]Since its inception in 2015, The Smilinggg philosophy and in particular the 3 G's (Gratitude, Generosity and Personal Growth / The Growth Mindset) remains fundamental in helping my mental health and all round wellbeing. It has since provided both myself and many others with a loose framework to live our lives by.[/p][p]If my Smilinggg participation in UTS165:[/p][p]- Raises money for Samaritans to enable them to carry out their vision and mission.[/p][p]- Raises awareness of Smilinggg and encourages participation in The Smilinggg Mile.[/p][p]- Encourages people to talk and listen openly and compassionately about their own and others mental health.[/p][p]- Provides hope, inspiration and courage to tackle our own challenges.[/p][p]- Redefines what is possible in each and every one of us.[/p][p]- Reminds people mental health awareness is every day and we experience mental health on a sliding scale in the very same way as physical health.[/p][p]- Sparks the power to believe both we and situations can improve.[/p][p]Then it will have been worth every one of my steps and smiles up, down and around the beautiful mountains of The Snowdonia National Park. [/p][p]Thank you ever so much for reading and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your donation if you choose to support this latest Smilinggg endeavour.[/p][p]If you'd like to learn a little more about my Smilinggg Story, you can read a Men's Fitness article that was recently published at : https://mensfitness.co.uk/mental-health/mental-health-support-samaritans-are-there-to-listen/ [/p][p]As always, Steps + Smiles.
