My story

[p]On the 1st May 2019 I will be joining an expedition to reach the summit of Island Peak, part of the Everest Region. [/p][p]Island Peak, standing at 6,160 meters was first ascended by a British expedition that included Tenzing Norgay. Eric Shipton’s party named the peak in 1953, as it resembled an island in a sea of ice. The peak is part of the south ridge of Lhotse and linked to the semicircle of cliffs that rise to the north of the summit of Nuptse. My adventure begins with a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and two days of easy walking to Namche bazaar. En- route to Base Camp. Our trail takes us into the high valleys of the Khumbu region, providing magnificent views of Everest and the satellite peaks. Island Peak is a substantial undertaking, which demands hard work and commitment; however the rewards of standing on top of this Himalayan mountain are tenfold.[/p][p]This is a 23 day expedition and will include crossing through difficult terrain, unpredictable weather conditions and high altitude.[/p][p]This will push me to my absolute limit of skill and endurance, having to cover huge distances with difficult challenging climbs. It will involve the use of ropes, ladders, crampons and ice picks, to assist in the crossing of glaziers, crevasses and a steep covered snow mountain.[/p][p]On average I shall be hiking for 5-8 hours daily with a 16 hour night climb push to and from the summit. Our team of 6 will be joined by a professional mountaineer and a local Sherpa.[/p][p]St Clare Hospice[/p][p]The reason I am taking on this challenge is to raise awareness and well needed financial and public support for St Clare Hospice.[/p][p]For the past year I have been volunteering as a Nursing Assistant in their In Patient Unit. I have had a chance to see first hand what great work this Hospice does in improving the lives of people in their end of life care and symptoms management. [/p][p]In 2017/18, of every £1 spent, 87p went directly on care for patients and their families. 13p went on generating funds and income. NHS funding covered 41% of the costs, leaving St Clare to raise £2.7 million. This means St Clare need to raise more than £7,000 every single day through voluntary funds.[/p][p]To continue this invaluable service they rely on charitable donations which are vital for keeping these types of services running within our communities.[/p][p]PLEASE NOTE: I have self financed the entire cost of this trip and therefore every penny raised will be going direct to St Clare Hospice[/p][p]I thank each and everyone of you in advance for your kind donation, no matter how small. ❤[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
