Team story

[p]Roshni & Raj’s Everest Base Camp 2018 Challenge[/p][p]Dear Family & Friends,[/p][p]Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. [/p][p]The Challenge[/p][p]We, father & daughter, have teamed up and taken the challenge of trekking to Everest Base Camp. The trek is scheduled for April 2018, and is expected to take us 13 days starting and ending at Lukla. Over the 13 days we will go through some tough terrain full of rocks, gravel, dust, snow and suspension bridges floating at a dizzying height which will test our endurance. It all starts with our landing at Lukla Airport, also known as Tenzing–Hillary Airport and rated the most dangerous airport in the world (Yikes!)[/p][p]As someone who has heating switched on 80% of the day in London’s winter where snow can be rare, spending spring in the Himalayas will be defying as we ascend slowly to higher altitudes fighting the challenges of lesser oxygen and below-freezing temperatures.[/p][p]Everest base camp lies at an altitude of 5,364 meters (17,598 ft.) While out there we will amass our courage and go a little bit higher to Kala Patthar at 5,554 meters (18,222 ft.), which offers an excellent view of the summit of Mount Everest and hosts the highest webcam in the world intended to gather information regarding climate change.[/p][p]We are fortunate to have had many opportunities made available to us that we often just take for granted, but there are children in the world that do not have this luxury. This has encouraged us to contribute in a way that would significantly help under privileged children, through “Friends of Kera” charity.[/p][p]The Charity[/p][p]The funds that we raise are in support of the charity "Friends of Kera" (www.friendsofkera.com) that provide help for Disadvantaged Children. The charity provides Wheel chairs, Hearing aids, Braille for visual impaired & organises sports events to bring children together and create awareness of their needs. The charity is run by dedicated volunteers who give their time, expertise, as well as raising funds towards helping & providing for poor, needy disabled and destitute children. Some of their past charitable projects include school refurbishment in Moshi, Tanzania, rebuild schools destroyed by the Nepal earthquake (in partnership with CareEducation, a London Charity), installation of a Water Bore Hole for the Gideon’s orphanage in a remote village in Kenya. Friends of Kera is also donating towards children's charity in UK i.e. monthly direct debits donations towards Save The Children and GOSH charity foundations. It does a truly remarkable service with whatever fund they have.[/p][p]For latest news and events of Friends of Kera, please visit their website, www.friendsofkera.com. And don’t forget to re-visit after April 2018 to catch a glimpse of all the action that we will have captured from our adventure.[/p][p]Your Donations[/p][p]Your support of generous donations will have a big impact on improving the lives of Disadvantaged Children. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations. No amount is too big or small. Every penny will help. All 100% of your contribution is used for charitable purposes by Friends of Kera, UK registered charity registered No 1144092. All who work for the charity are dedicated volunteers and no admin charge is taken. Lots of effort, dedication and service is given by the volunteers. We are sincerely therefore counting on your support to help us support the amazing work Friends of Kera does.[/p][p]The cost of our entire trip is fully self-funded and 100% of your contributions will be used for charitable purpose.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid (if you are UK tax payer) on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][p]Our Training[/p][p]As we train for the challenge, you can see the photo's here. [/p][p]https://photos.app.goo.gl/wYQX0ngJlLiBWpgm2 updated weekly.[/p][p]Thank you, Abhar, Asante, Gracias, Dhanyavad, Merci, Danke, Grazie, dank je, köszönöm[/p][p]Roshni Vekaria & Raj Vekaria[/p][p] [/p]
