Team story

[p]At the end of 2018 we received some shocking news our uncle and Hannah's partners dad, Phil Leggett found out he had a rare form of sinus cancer. The cancer was at stage four and had eaten away his cheek bone, being dangerously close to his brain. Without surgery, the doctors informed him that he had 3 months to live![/p][p]The operation took place at the start of this year. Thankfully the surgeons were able to remove the tumour, but this came with other complications. Phil lost one eye, his cheekbone and pallet. During stage 1 of the two day surgery Phil also had heart problems, meaning he was unable to complete his facial reconstruction. After a 3 month stay in ICU at the JR Hospital and radiotherapy treatment he is now recovering. He still has a long way to go and will soon have an MRI scan to determine whether any of the cancer has grown back. Fingers crossed it has not and Phil can continue to recover over the upcoming year. [/p][p]Prior to this the three of us watched a documentary a few years back about head and neck cancers and the lack of funding they received for research and treatment. There is an apparent lack of funding compared to other well known cancers. This made for some upsetting viewing and from that moment we vowed the next fundraiser we did would be for a head and neck cancer charity. Added to this we have obviously experienced how life changing a head and neck cancer can be first hand with our close family member Phil battling this cancer currently.[/p][p]Head and Neck cancer is one of the fastest growing forms of cancer and is the sixth most common type of cancer in the UK. Yet it is one of the least funded cancers. For research it only receives 2% of cancer research funding - Oracle Cancer Trust is the UK's leading charity solely dedicated to funding research into head and neck cancer.[/p][p]All three of us have taken on the challenge to run the Oxford Half Marathon to support the Oracle Cancer Trust and Phil. It is the longest distance any of us have ran, but we now have a few 10K runs under our belt and have been training hard alongside becoming parents for the first time (Vicky and Mark) and Hannah starting her new job. [/p][p]We welcome donations for this wonderful charity. Any amount would be very greatly received. Please Please dig as deep as you can to donate for this amazing cause.[/p][p]Thank you all so much,[/p][p]Vicky, Mark and Hannah[/p]
