My story

[p]The 2019 New York Marathon will be my fifth marathon and my third time running 26.2 miles through New York. Running a marathon is a huge challenge both mentally and physically and trust me it doesn’t get any easier. [/p][p]I am a sergeant serving the communities of South Wales and I’ve been a police officer for 9 years. [/p][p]I remember I was in work the awful day the news broke from Manchester, and as colleagues learnt of the awful incident that unfolded I remember feeling shocked and unbelievably sad for the families of Nicola and Fiona and also their colleagues. The policing family is like no other, we are one entire family and there was not one single officer that didn’t feel a sense of loss that day Nicola and Fiona lost their lives. [/p][p]As soon as I heard about the Run to Remember initiative I knew I wanted to be part of the team. This running challenge subsequently exposed me to a hobby that has turned into a great passion of mine. Running is my escape I use running to de-stress, to socialise and to keep fit both physically and mentally. Before I signed up for the Run to Remember campaign I’d barely run more than 5k. Over the past 4 years I’ve completed 4 marathons and over a dozen half marathons. It’s given me a new lease of life and I have made some of my best friends through this sport. [/p][p]Back in 2018 as part of my role as a Detective I attended a Family Liaison course where I met Bryn who was a guest speaker. We got talking and nearly straight away the topic turned to running. Bryn told me about the 2019 NY Marathon challenge. The money raised will fund university places for young people who have lost their parents through violent crime. I knew straight away I wanted to be involved in this incredible project.[/p][p]At the beginning of 2019 my whole world imploded when I suddenly lost my Mum. My Mum was a huge part of my life and supporter of my running. I remember last year telling her about this challenge and she was so excited for me. My mum was planning on coming to New York to support me. [/p][p]I’ve chosen to channel my energy and refocus my attention back into running. I not only want to raise as much money as I can to support this incredible charity but I want to do it for my Mum who I miss every single second of every single day. I want to make my Mum proud of me. Being a teacher herself if I can help fund a university place for a young person and give them opportunities for the future I know this would make her so happy.
