My story

[p]Hi, 🙋 I’m Tori, and my story and my ‘WHY’ is my Mum.[/p][p][br][/p][p]On Christmas Day this year, I am running a tough trail marathon across the volcanic island of Lanzarote, in aid to raise awareness of Lyme Disease - All donations will be going to Lyme Disease UK.[/p][p][br][/p][p]In the UK, with an estimated 3,000 new cases a year, Lyme Disease can cause tremendous suffering to some patients, each requiring an individualised holistic plan of care which no other speciality can give. Sufferers with ongoing symptoms see multiple inexperienced Doctors, costing the NHS thousands in various wasted appointments/investigations. Many are unable to work fulltime.[/p][p][br][/p][p]My Mum, Julia, now 50 with four grown-up children was enjoying a leisurely afternoon out when she was suddenly bitten by a tick back in 2011 whilst walking her dogs in Thetford Forest, Norfolk.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Before being bitten and subsequently infected, my Mum was a super active individual who also enjoyed the social life with her friends and family more than anything. [/p][p]My Mum, we'll know for being a social host and forever enjoying life in general.[/p][p][br][/p][p]She will always say ‘my kids are my life’ - she loved playing Mummy to all of us as kids, making sure we never went without and bombing us around to all our hobbies...Dancing, gymnastics, swimming, roller-skating, keyboard lessons, basketball, Brownies - YOU NAME IT, WE DONE IT![/p][p][br][/p][p]She worked full-time too! I often wonder how she did it all, along with keeping up her glamorous appearance and a spotless house.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Looking back I feel extremely privileged for the life my Mum gave me.[/p][p]She’s supported me in all my ambitions in my life so far, coming along to my auditions, supporting me in my performances and studies. [/p][p]Oh, and along with the ‘I told you so’s’ for all my bad decisions too.[/p][p][br][/p][p]One thing my Mumma has instilled into me is to never give up, if you want it enough, it is possible and the hard work is only mental.[/p][p][br][/p][p]From 2011 onwards, life started to become a little more challenging. Firstly for Julia, it was tiredness, loss of energy, headaches and slowing moving into aches and pains across her entire body.[/p][p][br][/p][p]MS, Fibromyalgia.... you name it they gave her meds for treating the symptoms and not the direct cause of it. [/p][p]Chronic Lyme Disease is not recognised by the NHS, therefore there is little help for treatment in the UK.[/p][p][br][/p][p]She then began to develop other major underlying health conditions and the medication kept piling up.[/p][p]Around her mid 40ies, her right hip was starting to create paint and gradually becoming worse, having another knock-on effect on her mobility. [/p][p]She wasn’t well enough to undergo surgery, so she was put onto high doses of strong painkillers.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Julia did finally undergo surgery, but where her left hip had failed her, her second hip took a battering - Round 2 begins! 😩[/p][p][br][/p][p]Then the bed-ridden period began again, her health took a turn for the worse. [/p][p]Let me tell you as a witness - months feel like years and years feel like centuries. It’s painful to watch and you can’t even imagine the mental pain on top of the physical pain that the individual suffering is going through. [/p][p][br][/p][p]My Mum like thousands of others suffering never saw this coming! It completely sweeps your independence from right under you.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Over the last year and a half, my Mum has finally been able to take baby steps into just gaining a fraction of her independence back.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I am extremely proud of her. This is my way of showing her how proud I am and two that I also feel closer to her Christmas day whilst I am away on my travels.[/p][p]Back to Julia...[/p][p]With little help, she was determined to take back more control. She began the Marshall Protocol, a high alkaline diet, along with cutting out various foods and drinks that had direct effect on her underlying health conditions.[/p][p]All of this came with the hardest part being the mental effort of using every last bit of energy she had to become more active. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Getting out of bed and putting one foot in front of the other in the beginning stages was a huge achievement.[/p][p]The simple personal tasks like showering, doing her hair and make-up would come with a knock-on effect of at least a two-day recovery.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Slowly but surely she built it up to housework (which she loves and had missed! 😂 - I don't quit understand this part! Who like cleaning!), walking a few laps around the park on her crutches and light resistance band exercises - to regain some strength and lose weight so that she was fit enough for her second hip operation.[/p][p][br][/p][p]It took time but, in October this year, she had her second hip done. Her hip specialist surgeon knew she needed it done urgently due to developing Peripheral Neuropathy in her left foot, which is a type of nerve damage that can cause pain, numbness or weakness.[/p][p][br][/p][p]This is now her next hurdle along with getting a hearing-aid fitted, due to loss of hearing in one ear from getting shingles brought on by Lyme Disease.[/p][p][br][/p][p]She has made a speedy recovery from her hip-op, proving everyone she was determined to fight all her body’s aches and pains.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Julia often describes the feeling of Lyme Disease like the day after you run a marathon. Sometimes that’s a good day for her.[/p][p][br][/p][p]So here I am, I’ve seen the pain, the struggles, the hundreds of doctors and hospital appointments.[/p][p][br][/p][p]There needs to be more awareness in the UK as little help and support is available. [/p][p][br][/p][p]I know times are hard for everyone right now financially, however, whatever I raise will be amazing but it’s the awareness I want to create.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I am currently in Lanzarote for a few months, hence where the challenge will take place.[/p][p][br][/p][p]This is now my second marathon I have organised for charity, I am aware it’s going to be a lot more challenging than running in the UK, due to the climate and gradients of the island - but I’m UP FOR IT! 🥳[/p][p]I almost pulled out due to how hard I have found running out here. However ‘I can’t’ is limiting belief.[/p][p]I couldn’t honestly live with the self-disappointment![/p][p][br][/p][p]What is too steep to run I will hike my way up! Trust me I’m completely this! [/p][p][br][/p][p]I will be tracking my marathon on Map My Run app, whilst keeping live updates across both my Facebook and Instagram platforms.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I will aim to begin the Marathon around 7am GMT on Xmas day. - Time to be confirmed.[/p][p][br][/p][p]From now until the 25th December support me by helping me raise awareness for Lyme Disease 🦠.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Tori 🏃?♀?[/p]
