My story

[p]After last year’s amazing fundraising success, Virunga National Park is once again taking on the challenge of the Virgin Money London Marathon 2018! [/p][p]Virunga National Park is one of the most beautiful and bio-diverse protected areas in the world, and home to some of the last critically endangered mountain gorillas. But it has faced decades of conflict, and Virunga’s dedicated staff are working to protect it. Together we can help secure a safe and sustainable future for the park, it’s communities and exceptional wildlife, for generations to come. [/p][p]This year one of the extraordinary female park rangers will be running the marathon for Virunga, as she leaves the Congo for the first time:[/p][p]“My name is Angèle, I am 25 years old and I graduated the ranger training programme in 2014 - the first year Virunga introduced female rangers. I wanted to be a ranger in Virunga so I could help protect the park and it’s amazing wildlife. The process to become a park ranger was very challenging, you have to run 30km without a break in your heavy army boots, but I made it and now I help to train other new recruits. I wanted to run the marathon to raise money for the park and support my colleagues who work hard everyday. [/p][p]I have never run a marathon before, but I have been training every day. I am excited and a bit nervous to travel to London as I have never left the Congo - I just hope I don’t get lost on the course… but at least I don’t have to worry about avoiding the hippos!” [/p][p]The park is hoping to raise crucial funds to help support its key programmes - from wildlife conservation projects, to providing ranger training and equipment - all of this is dependent on the generosity of Virunga’s community. [/p][p]Please do help us raise money for Virunga National Park, and support Angèle. Donations can be made in all major currencies here on Virgin Money Giving, and if you are a US taxpayer, you can make a donation directly through Virunga Fund Inc.’s website.[/p][p][br][/p]

Your work is critical and the world is listening. No rangers should have to give their lives to protect wildlife. Respect and gratitude to you all.
