My story

[p]Well who would have thought it - I appear to have volunteered to do the London Marathon in April 2014- For someone who, less than two years ago, had not run since the days of cross country at school - this is a huge ask.[/p][p]Two years ago I lost just over 4 stone in weight, having always been big, inactive and anti exercise, hitting 40 saw me change my life - shedding the weight and ultimately starting exercise including running. So I figured if I can do that, then why not the marathon to really push myself ![/p][p]I'm stubborn and am up for the challenge, especially when I am doing it for a charity that means so much to me - The Calvert trust. [/p][p]Founded in 1978, Calvert Trust is the inspiration of John Fryer-Spedding, whose vision was to enable people with disabilities to benefit from outdoor activities in the countryside. They have three centres in the UK providing specialised activity holidays for people with physcial and mental disabilities.[/p][p]As a child and teenager I had problems with my legs and back, having several operations, and always thought I couldnt do anything remotely active. This was of course to a much lesser extent than to the disabilities of those who benefit so much from Calvert, but it helps me understand the whole ethos of the trust in that 'its what you can do that counts not what you cant'. It is with this ethos in mind that I am taking on this challenge and on my way will be completing several other events.[/p][p]None of my running to date has involved me asking for sponsorship and it is not something I had planned to do but when this was suggested by one of the Calvert fundraisers I just couldnt refuse. It's a win win, a chance to challenge myself more than ever, while raising funds for this fantastic charity.[/p][p]I have volunteered at the trust through Rotary for the last 5 years, although my actual first volunteering and knowledge of the charity was way back in 1995. Seeing the impact the trust has on individuals is inspiring and humbling.[/p][p]I know someone is always asking for money but I do hope you can help me with this - every £1 counts so please dont feel that you cant just donate a couple of quid - it all helps. [/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on Calvert's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
