My story

[p]On my visit to Malawi in the summer of 2016, wandering round small villages, I realised the lists posted on the trees in the village were of the many children who had passed their school leaving certificate at the age of about 14 and were therefore eligible to progress to four years of secondary education. Unfortunately however that is where government funding stops and, of the many names on the list, it is sad to know that only a minority of those children come from families who can afford the cost of secondary education. This inevitably impacts more on girls, of whom only about 15% start and only about 5% complete secondary education, without which they cannot progress to higher education, nursing, teaching etc etc . Especially during the financial constraints of the pandemic more and more girls have been taken out of school, often becoming teenage brides and mothers, thus repeating the cycle of inequity. Due to the distances from the villages to the secondary schools, boarding is often a necessity, so I have chosen a £350 target as this is the approximate cost to give a bursary through the Mamie Martin foundation to support one girl through secondary school for a year and this covers fees, boarding, textbooks, schoolbags, uniform, shoes and toiletries (nothing fancy here, just soap and sanitary wear) Compare that to boarding school fees in the UK which I believe can top 40k plus extras and please dig into your pockets to give Malawian girls a fair start in life ( and give me an incentive to get back on my bike to shed my lockdown lbs !!)[/p]

Go for it Wendy. I support organizations that help girls and women make their own health decisions. I remember going for bike rides with you at Harrogate College.
