My story

[p]Thank you for visiting our team's fundraising page for the 2020 sponsored London Legal Walk. We're taking on 10K for justice on 5th October.[/p][p]We are walking with the Lord Chief Justice and thousands of lawyers to raise funds for Working Families.[/p][p]Our team is: Zoe Holland, Alice Hooley, Emily Pritty, Flora Wallington and Julia Waltham - all dedicated staff at Working Families.[/p][p]Working Families is the UK's work-life balance charity. We help working parents and carers - and their employers - find a better balance between responsibilities at home and in the workplace. We provide free legal advice to parents and carers on their rights at work. We give employers the tools they need to support their employees while creating a flexible, high-performing workforce. And we advocate on behalf of the UK's 13 million working parents, influencing policy through campaigns informed by ground-breaking research.[/p][p]During the past six months of COVID-19, Working Families has never been more needed, and never been busier. At peak crisis, queries to our free legal helpline grew six-fold.[/p][p]"I am pregnant and have been made redundant, without notice, because of coronavirus. My employer says that this is not linked to my pregnancy at all, but I am the only employee being made redundant."[/p][p]"I am a single mum working in a pub on a zero-hours contract. My fear is if the pub closes due to COVID-19 [it later did] that I won’t be able to pay my rent."[/p][p]"I am a lone parent with a toddler. I work full-time. I am on an NRPF visa. The person who usually looks after my child is self-isolating. I can't claim any help with formal childcare and am not eligible for furlough. I'm using up annual leave, but this will run out soon. Because I have no recourse to public funds, we will starve."[/p][p]We created seven COVID-specific information and guidance pages on our website, which have reached 1 in 26 working parents throughout the crisis - equivalent to at least one parent from every school class across the UK. Our website has had over 1 million unique visitors since coronavirus surged in March.[/p][p]Meanwhile, our policy and influencing team have been tirelessly advocating for working parents throughout the pandemic, ensuring their needs are heard by decision-makers as the worlds of work, childcare and school have turned upside down.[/p][p]40% of working parents with children under 10 are still struggling to find wrap-around childcare, yet need to work. The furlough scheme is tapering to a close this autumn and redundancies (and COVID-19 cases) are rising. We fully expect our helpline to be inundated again.[/p][p]Please sponsor our walkers as generously as you can, so that Working Families can continue to support and advocate for the rights of working parents throughout the pandemic and beyond, and maximise this window of opportunity to embed flexible, family-friendly working as the norm.[/p][p]Many thanks for your support.[/p]
