Team story

PLEASE PUT WHO YOU KNOW IN THE TEAM ON YOUR MESSAGE - THANKS

John , Nick and Ian have assembled a fine collection of athletes to help them raise money for 2 local charities close to their hearts. Well, actually convinced a number of overweight, lazy, unfit mates to give up 3 days and cycle 180 miles across the country from coast to coast, in the name of charity.

We are raising money for St Leonard’s Hospice – York and St Gemma’s Hospice – Leeds.

15 men, 3 days, 2 hospices and 180 miles – Morecambe Bay to Bridlington – via visits to the Hospices in Leeds and York.

So, get your short arms in your long pockets and dig deep - we’ll be walking like John Wayne for 2 weeks after this. All you have to do is click the mouse, make a donation and we do all the hard work for you! For you taxpayers, don’t forget to sign up to Gift Aid (your donation will be worth 25% more). We appreciate your support, every donation, no matter how small, is invaluable to the Hospices.

A message from John on why we are raising money for St Leonard’s :

“I lost my dad in 2001 to a brain tumour, the majority of the last year of his life was spent under excellent care from the staff at St Leonard’s. They do an amazing job for many families at what is a very distressing and hard time, I cannot thank them enough for the support and care they gave both my father and family during this time. It is very hard to remember back to the days and hours spent visiting my dad during his last few months. However, these times were made a lot easier by the fantastic work of St Leonard’s. 10 years on it would be the easy option to move on and not remember. I’m not one for an easy option…so, I would like to raise as much money as is possible to not only thank them for the support they gave me and my family, but more importantly to enable them to continue their great work for other people and families like mine”.

A message from Nick on why we are raising money for St Gemma’s :

“My Wife, Amanda, lost both her Mum and Dad to cancer in 1996 and 2008 respectively. As Denise and Martin’s illnesses advanced the family first benefitted from the palliative care offered by the Hospice during some of the most difficult times. Eventually they both spent their final weeks at St Gemma’s under the fabulous and dedicated care of the skilled staff. Unfortunately, I never knew Denise but got to know Martin extremely well – whenever we visited St Gemma’s he would describe the staff not as nurses or carers but as “Angels”...although under tragic circumstances, he clearly got to know them well. Without fundraising, this outstanding care and assistance would not be available. Having witnessed first hand how big a help the Hospice is to patients, families and loved ones I have been looking for a challenge to raise money and make a donation to this amazing charity, on behalf of my family, so that other people continue to receive the help they need”.

A message from Ian on why we are raising oney for St Gemma's:

“I lost my sister in September 2008 to Melanoma (skin cancer). The staff at St Gemma's looked after Claire incredibly well in her last days. They are excellent at what they do. They made her comfortable and looked after us as a family. They are the nicest people you don’t want to meet and they do such a fantastic job under such difficult circumstances.”

The team is made up of:

Nick Wright, John Readman, Dom Greeves, James Hill, James Mortimer, Alex Hall, Mark Thompson, Ian Harris, Andy Miles, Lee Kirby, Tom Abbey, Simon Sterne, Ben Whiting, Henry Weldon and a part time lame 2 day contribution from James Craven (but when you have a hip replacement at under 30 then it’s probably fair enough).

A big thank you to:

Search Laboratory for sponsoring both the team shirts and the team mini bus - www.searchlaboratory.com. Search Laboratory are the best in the business at helping you maximise the profit from your website using Search Engine Marketing. Both the mini-bus and the support transit van are being supplied by PJR Self-Drive www.pjr-selfdrive.co.uk of Hull.

Alex’s Dad who runs a Pharmacy in Hull www.raymondchall.com who is donating first aid kits, energy drinks and the important cream to stop your bottom hurting after 180 miles on a bike!

The two support vehicle drivers: Nick’s Dad, Philip, and their good family friend, Steve Parnaby.
