My story

[p]Thank you for visiting our team's fundraising page for the 2020 London Legal Walk 10xChallenge. Though the usual Walk is not able to go ahead this year due to Covid-19, we are still taking part in the 5th October 2020 with a virtual 10k where we are. [/p][p]Some of us will also be taking on creative 10xChallenges, where showcasing any skills, talents and fancy dress is strongly encouraged. [/p][p]Our team is: Georgina Uwaoma, Valerie Clark, Cecilia Potez, Laura Clark, Anne Vallely and Olly Troath (with more to follow) [/p][p]Youth Legal and Resource Centre is a charity who prides itself in giving legal advice to young people under the age of 25 and families with children. We purposefully help these groups of people as they are recognised as the most vulnerable in society. We provide free specialist legal advice in relation to housing law, community care law and debt and money issues for those with disabilities, care leavers and carers in a youth friendly environment using a holistic approach, improving young people’s life chances and preventing crises. We are also able to do this work with Legal Aid funding, however with the cuts to that curtailing access to justice, it is very difficult for vulnerable people to get the specialist legal advice they need. It is also impossible for us to survive only on Legal Aid funding and grants which are so difficult to obtain now (and will be in the foreseeable future) which is why it is so important we get donations from caring people like you to help keep us going.[/p][p]Your donation means that we will be able to continue to have funding to help clients like H who was an 18-year-old who had been diagnosed with Huntingdon’s disease and was street homeless having fled their mother’s home due to violence. To give you the back story on H’s case, a referral was made by a local youth centre to the local authority concerning an application as homeless but the local authority failed to complete an assessment to confirm whether they were owed the initial duties under the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 and Housing Act 1996. H remained street homeless and presented to night shelters which changed from day to day. H found it difficult to sleep in the night shelters due to their medical condition and its symptoms made them very drowsy. Their physical and mental health deteriorated rapidly as they did not have the drive to seek the support they required. H would have to leave the shelters at 7am and would catch up on their sleep in the youth centre when it opened up at 10.30am. Between 7am and 10.30am H would wonder the streets. Youth Legal wrote a letter to the council supporting her application as homeless and reminding the local authority of their obligations to homeless applicants. The council accommodated H in temporary accommodation confirming H was owed the relief duty. They later concluded H was owed the main housing duty under the Housing Act 1996. H is now in a stable condition with a roof over her head and is able to get the support she needs within her community.[/p][p]Without your donations we would not be able to advise young people like H of their housing rights and the obligations of the local authorities to them.[/p][p]Our target is £1,500 and it would be fantastic to surpass that, but any amount would be very welcome and appreciated. It would be great too if you would ask your friends, family and colleagues who might also be interested in supporting our work to donate too.[/p][p]Please support our walkers and runners as generously as you are able. Thank you if you do and for thinking about it and we understand if you can’t as times are difficult for a lot of us.[/p][p]Many thanks for your support[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donation[/p]
