My story

[p]Thank you for visiting our team's fundraising page for the 2018 London Legal sponsored walk.[/p][p]We are walking to raise funds for The Zacchaeus 2000 Trust (Z2K) and all funds raised through this page by LLST will be donated to Z2K with no deduction.[/p][p]Our team members are: Tanya Sutton (with more to follow)[/p][p]Zacchaeus 2000 Trust (also known as Z2K) is an advice and campaigning charity working across London to solve problems within the welfare benefits system.[/p][p]We provide free advice and support for people on low income across London. Every year we help hundreds of people to deal with their benefits and housing issues. In addition, we campaign for change to improved government policies relating to poverty and welfare at local and national levels. Our campaigns build on our evidence-based policy research and target injustice at all levels of the social security system.[/p][p]With a dedicated team of 14 staff and a broad range of committed volunteers, we work to stop people losing their benefits and their homes. In 2017 we helped 1,054 people and handled 1,967 cases ranging from disability benefits to rent arrears. The total financial benefit to our clients from all concluded cases was just over £2 million. In addition we took 188 disability cases to tribunal and won 151 of these. And we supported many more to avoid homelessness.[/p][p]In addition to hard outcomes, we know that our work has a positive impact on well being. In our summer survey, 75% of respondents said that working with Z2K had helped to reduce their stress levels; similarly 77% said that the charity had a positive impact on their happiness. More broadly, clients discussed their relief in getting their issues resolved, and said the charity had played a vital role in building their self-confidence and re-establishing their independence.[/p][p]In 2019 we want to build on these outcomes. It is a challenging time to be working within the advice sector, not least because we are reliant on grants and donations and we hold no local authority or government contracts. We believe that it is through our independence that we are able to challenge injustices in welfare rights. We are seeing an increased demand for our services following recent welfare reforms, the reduction of legal aid, and an increase in homelessness against a backdrop of affordable housing shortages. We are working on new strategies to address this and have increased pro bono support from corporate law firms, as well as university law faculties, to help alleviate some of the pressure on our services.[/p][p]The London Legal Walk is an important fundraiser, and every year we aim raise money towards the cost of our casework. All funds that we raise through the walk comes directly to us, with no fees or charges. This year, we will use it to enable us to expand our homelessness prevention work. We will use the funding to:[/p][p]- Challenge rent arrears[/p][p]- House people in the private rented sector[/p][p]- Take benefit issues to tribunal[/p][p]We are appealing to all supporters to donate what you can and be assured that we are grateful for your support.[/p]
