My story

[p]Thank you for visiting our teams fundraising page for the 2019 London Legal Walk. We are walking on 17 June 2019 to raise funds for The Zacchaeus 2000 Trust (Z2K) and all funds raised through this page by The London Legal Support Trust will be donated to Z2K with no deduction. Our team members are (more to follow): Tanya Sutton, Samantha Evans, Raji Hunjan, Andy McCarthy, Anne Killeen, Daniel Wrapson, Eimear Twomey, Ella Abraham, Lucy Isaac, Marc Francis, Natasha Cross, Vier Baptiste, Zoe Adkin, Mick McAteer, Jim Dobel, Siobhan Garibaldi, Emma Lough[/p][p]Zacchaeus 2000 Trust (Z2K) is an advice and campaigning charity working across London to solve problems within the welfare benefits system. We work to achieve this through:[/p][p]-Casework focused on homelessness prevention and supporting people to access the benefits they are entitled to[/p][p]-Benefits appeals – we take cases to tribunal to appeal negative decisions[/p][p]-Complaints – we work to challenge systems through supporting people to challenge maladministration[/p][p]-Housing – we run a Private Rented Access Scheme through which we support tenants to secure tenancies[/p][p]-Wrap around – we offer clients additional support to help them address broader challenges, such as financial management, mental health issues, addiction etc.[/p][p]-Our policy work focuses on reform in the Welfare system, as well as Council Tax support and housing matters[/p][p]Our clients, their needs, voices and stories are at the heart of everything we do. Their experiences inform and inspire all our campaigns, and we actively support them to work with us and speak out for themselves. [/p][p]In 2018, we helped 871 new clients and handled 1,648 cases ranging from disability benefits to rent arrears. The total financial benefit to our clients from all concluded cases was just over £3 million. Of these individuals, we helped Jake*:[/p][p]Jake* came to us when he was at risk of starvation. He had rent arrears and was at serious risk of eviction. He had been turned away from the authorities that should have helped him, causing him to retreat and become socially isolated.[/p][p]Z2K gave him foodbank vouchers and advocated on his behalf to get his housing benefit reinstated and his rent arrears paid. He had been denied disability benefits, even though he clearly had complex physical and mental needs. We started the process of appealing to DWP.[/p][p]Over 5 months we built up trust and helped him understand that he has a right to live safely/securely. He was recently awarded higher rate PIP and ESA and has gained confidence.[/p][p]This not only demonstrates the impact of our casework, it also reinforces the need for significant change in the system to ensure that people who are in need of state benefits can navigate the system without relying on advice agencies, which are already working with limited resources. Here’s what your support could mean for our small charity:[/p][p]-A donation of £20 could support our tenancy engagement officer to assist clients who are homeless or insecurely housed to access accommodation in the private rented sector[/p][p]-A donation of £50 could provide training for our clients around financial management[/p][p]-A donation of £180 could fund a client who has been refused sickness or disability related benefits with representatives to appeal the decision[/p][p]-A donation of £1,130 could fund one of our caseworkers for two weeks; advising in areas such as housing, benefits and debt[/p][p]Please give as generously as you can – and don’t forget to Gift Aid!
