My story

[p]The Challenge[/p][p]On 30th June 2018 I will be taking part in the 20 Bridges Swim in New York, along with 14 other swimmers who will be swimming on the same day.[/p][p]The swim is a continuous 28.5 miles circumnavigation around Manhattan Island and is organised by New York Open Water.[/p][p]The Challenge in Detail[/p][p]My swim will start in the early hours of the morning, and hopefully I will be finished in time for last orders! The swim will start from Battery Park at the southern part of Manhattan Island, and I will then swim under all 20 Bridges in an anti-clockwise direction, finishing at Battery Park.[/p][p]During the swim I will be wearing one standard swimming costume, one swim cap, a pair of goggles, earplugs and lashings of Vaseline and suncream! I am not allowed to wear a wetsuit, flippers, paddles or any device that increases buoyancy or speed. I will be accompanied by an escort boat with my pilot and crew on board, and I will have a separate kayaker who will be paddling alongside. [/p][p]Once the swim has commenced I am not allowed to touch anything (other than my feeds which will be thrown at me on a piece of rope). This means that I am not allowed to touch the boat, hang onto the kayak, hold onto a pier etc. Once I have started at Battery Park, I have to swim continuously until I get back around to Battery Park.[/p][p]I want to mention my crew at this point as the crew is absolutely vital to my success in my swim. My dear friend Joanne Postins is coming to Manhattan with me and she will act as my support crew on the day. Joanne has previously crewed for my English Channel solo swim in 2012 and my Around Jersey solo swim in 2015. She has seen what I go through during a long swim (it isn't pretty!) and she will be looking out for my welfare, and providing me with my feeds and drinks at hourly intervals.[/p][p]About Me[/p][p]I am a 44 year old mother of two teenagers and I work full time. This is not going to be easy.[/p][p]I train with the Masters squad at Basingstoke Bluefins Swimming Club. Although I am not the fastest swimmer in the squad, I can swim all day long (my Channel swim took 16 hours!).[/p][p]The charity[/p][p]I am fundraising for St Michael's Hospice in North Hampshire. St Michael's Hospice is a local charity which provides high quality palliative care throughout North Hampshire. St Michael's Hospice enables anyone with a life-limiting illness, their families and provides specialist care and support. https://www.stmichaelshospice.org.uk/[/p][p]St Michael's Hospice requires £3.9 million annually to operate and to provide this specialist care. Only 19% of this is funded by the North Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group. The remaining £3.1 million each year comes from the donations from fundraising activities.[/p][p]I hope that my challenge inspires you. I know that St Michael's Hospice will really appreciate every single donation that is made.[/p][p]Thank you very much.[/p][p]Zoe Sadler[/p][p](Various photos below, including two of my favourite swimming photographs. One is of me standing on the beach in France just after completing my Channel solo swim. Another is a jubilant photo of me grinning whilst swimming back to the escort boat after my Channel solo swim)[/p][p]Links:[/p][p]My blog - details of my past swims https://zoesadler.wordpress.com/[/p][p]New York Open Water https://www.nyopenwater.org/[/p][p]St Michael's Hospice https://www.stmichaelshospice.org.uk/[/p][p][br][/p]
