My story

[p]UPDATE *30/09/2021*: We have just completed our final runs this week. Training has been tough for us both at times and we have had to dig deep and motivate ourselves, especially when it has been pouring with rain. We have set ourselves a structured training programme, which will hopefully set us in good stead for Sunday. We have kept a positive mindset and have learnt that anything is possible. We will be thinking of Abbie during the whole event and have transfers of her on our arms for when those low moments come. [/p][p]Thank you all for your very generous donations, we really have appreciated each and everyone.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Sam Attard and Bella Hodge are running the London Marathon on October 3rd, 2021, in memory of Abbie Shaw, who passed away on September 11th, 2006 from a cancer called Adrenal Neuroblastoma. Abbie was only 5 years old when she passed away. Adrenal Neuroblastoma is a very rare form of cancer, which is extremely aggressive and mostly affects babies and young children. In the majority of cases the disease has spread by the time of diagnosis, which is what had happened in Abbie’s case, and despite intensive treatment and achieving remission many children, including Abbie, subsequently relapse and die. It is one of the most difficult childhood cancers to treat and further research is needed to beat this disease giving children in the future the chance of survival. So Abbie’s Fund main aim is to raise as much money as they can to fund the Team at the ICR who are working on, and getting close to, finding a blood test which will detect neuroblastoma. If this could be achieved it would not only save many lives, by early detection, but also save young children from many horrendous scans and tests which are not only painful but very scary. [/p][p]Sam:[/p][p]"Last year I ran a half marathon for St Peter’s Hospital, after a close family friend died of ITP. This has inspired me to take on the challenge of running a marathon, as I have always said I would raise money for Abbie’s Fund. It will be a massive challenge for me, so I have already started training for it as I know I will need to build it up gradually."[/p][p]"I have known Abbie since I was 3 years old. We went to the same school and spent many hours together playing, birthday parties and holidays together. My memory of Abbie has faded over the years, but I do remember the fact that she was always smiling, even when she was so unwell. I never knew how poorly she really was. I think everyone who knew her would agree that's just who she was."[/p][p]Bella[/p][p]"Having challenged myself to run a half marathon last year in loving memory of our dear family friend Jocelyn, I was inspired to take on the challenge of running a marathon in memory of Abbie Shaw."[/p][p]I didn’t know Abbie on a personal level, but I do know many people whose lives she so greatly touched and what a gorgeous girl she was, always smiling, and full of joy."[/p][p]Both Sam and Bella know that it will be a huge challenge as neither of them are natural ‘runners’, but having achieved a half marathon last year, it has inspired them both to up their ambitions and run the whole marathon! So please wish them luck and any donations would be very much appreciated, not only by them, but also by the Team at the ICR and Abbie’s Fund Trustees, and of course, Abbie’s family.[/p]
