My story

[p]It's an age old story - middle aged bloke gets a bit bulgy about the middle, goes out for a (very short and slow) run, 11 months later he's about to complete his first half marathon and is signed up for the London Marathon in April 2018. People are even calling him Forest Gump. OK it's not an age old story, or even a particularly exciting one, but it's mine. [/p][p]I'm raising money for the North Wales Cancer Appeal (northwalescancerappeal.co.uk) via Awyr Las ('Blue Sky' for the English amongst you). As many people will know I lost my dad to cancer when he was 59. He was a runner - he ran for Oxford University, and he was there at the Iffley Road Track in 1954 when Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile. Most beach visits as a child would involve him jogging off for a couple of miles barefoot up the waterline. [/p][p]My friend Tony Devenport is also running in London but not with a charity place - he lost his dad JD to cancer and is steering any support for HIS run over to MY page - so if you're here to sponsor Tony you're in the right place! Tony's very quick so make sure you sponsor him lots.[/p][p]The North Wales Cancer Appeal was originally set up as the Ron Smith Appeal in '91, just two years before my dad died, when patients in North Wales had to travel to Clatterbridge for treatment. In the 12 years that followed they raised £2m towards equipment and facilities. Cancer affects all of us directly or indirectly at some time, so having the best possible facilities is vital for all of us - We all have friends and family we know affected by cancer so I hope you will help me to support NWCA.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to the charity. [/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. [/p][p]I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Update: 27.11.2017 - I've now run half marathon or more every weekend for the last 6 weeks, including 1:51:56 in the Conwy Half. Go me![/p][p]Update: 14.01.2018 - Up to 19 miles on the long runs, with a couple of 7-8 milers mid week. Oooch, my legs hurt.[/p][p]Update: 22/02/2018 - Hitting the miles and enjoying it. Also met the other NWCA runners last week which was good too. Longest run now is over 21 miles and with lots of hills too, and I'm averaging 35 odd miles a week. I've been going with the policy 'run as far as you can as often as you can' but have a more structured approach for the 8 week run in now to ensure I 'taper' properly. I might be starting to like this...[/p][p]Update 13/03/2018 - Wrexham 20 miler last Sunday, completed in 2 hr 57 mins 39 secs - very pleased with that, but it's a bit of a reality check because I'd been cruising for a while and that was haaaard. And I need to do that for another 6.2 miles to be under 4 hours in London. More hard work ahead![/p][p]Update 05/04/2018 - into the taper now, the wind down to the race. Distance and effort starting to reduce. Just need to get rid of these swollen glands and sore throat, but better now than in two weeks time![/p][p]If anyone's interested they can follow my training at www.strava.com/athletes/andy_knapp[/p][p][br][/p]
