My story

[p]We are running the London Marathon on 3rd October 2021. By the time we run the event it will be over two years since we first had our places confirmed![/p][p]Our fundraising page has carried over from 2020 following on from us completing the London Virtual Marathon on 4th October 2020. (Rob had to re-qualify by running his qualifying time again at the virtual event). Therefore we are continuing to fundraise for our two chosen charities for this next event.[/p][p]We continue to fundraise for Friends of PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Southampton) and Friends of Rosewood School. These two charities support organisations that have both featured in our son Mikey's life in a huge way.[/p][p]Since we completed the virtual London marathon last year Mikey has had two admissions to PICU, the second of which was 5 weeks long. [/p][p]This is our way of giving back to those two organisations that have had such a sizeable impact on Mikey's life.[/p][p]Please continue to read for the more detailed story of us trying to get to the London Marathon! Let's hope it doesn't get cancelled again.[/p][p]We completed the virtual London marathon on Sunday 4th October. We did our run at another event that did go ahead - the Dorney Lake marathon.[/p][p]Rob had to run it in under 3h 20m in order for his London 2020 good for age place to be rolled over to London 2021. He ran it in 3h 18m![/p][p]Anna ran round in 3h 32m despite the horrible wet, windy conditions.[/p][p]We have continued our training through lockdown and have been training specifically for the marathon since July.[/p][p]We suspended our fundraising efforts earlier in the year when London was postponed but now we are resuming as we have a degree of certainty of what is going to happen on 4th October. We want to try and raise as much money as possible for our two charities.[/p][p]We appreciate that for many this has been a very difficult time financially and it may be that you are not able to donate to our page. Perhaps you could help us in another way such as sharing our fundraising page on your social media. [/p][p]Please read on below to find out about our charities that we are fundraising for.[/p][p]The London marathon is the world's largest annual single day fundraising event and so we don't feel it would be right to take part without fundraising for two charities that support organisations that have made a difference to our family. They are both small charities that do not have their own London marathon places.[/p][p]Friends of PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Southampton) aims to support children and their families by providing vital equipment and services that are not always provided by the statutory authorities. Recently they have contributed to the cost of specialised ambulances and expanding PICU by two extra bed spaces.[/p][p]As many of you know our son Mikey was in PICU for SEVEN weeks in the summer of 2018. This is a rather exceptional length of stay in PICU and we are very grateful to them for their care of Mikey.[/p][p]Friends of Rosewood School raises funds for additional resources, equipment and enrichment opportunities to benefit learners at Rosewood. Currently they are fundraising for special buggies and they would also like to part fund a sunken trampoline for rebound therapy. Rosewood School is a day school for pupils aged 2-19 years with profound and multiple learning difficulties.[/p][p]Mikey has attended Rosewood School for twelve years and again our family is very grateful to the love and care they have shown Mikey over the years and for the progress he has made while he has been there.[/p][p]We gained our London marathon places by the good for age system. Rob in particular has worked extremely hard over the last few years to obtain his place - the men's qualifying times are notoriously difficult to achieve. We have both run a marathon in the last 18 months in which we achieved our GFA times and so London will be a celebration of the hard work paying off![/p][p]Photo 1 - Anna at the Dorney Lake marathon October 2020 (Credit - Active Training World)[/p][p]Photo 2 - Anna finishing the Boston UK marathon April 2019 (Credit - David Dales Sport/Action Images)[/p][p]Photo 3 - Rob finishing the Greater Manchester marathon April 2018 (Credit - Xtra Mile Events)[/p][p]Photo 4 - Rob, Beth, Anna & Mikey (Credit - Paul Hammond)[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
