My story

[p]We are walking the Felbrigg Norfolk 16 Mile Mountain Walk to raise funds for the Norfolk Heart Trust.[/p][p]If you, a member of your family or a friend have been treated for heart disease at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, there is a good chance that the equipment has been donated by the Norfolk Heart Trust. There are lots of different ways that a heart can go wrong, which is why heart disease is the single biggest cause of death in the UK every year. [/p][p]Common problems include angina, heart failure, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms and congenital heart disease (those that you are born with). The Norfolk Heart Trust's aim is to improve the quality and quantity of life for sufferers of all these conditions and ensuring that they can be treated close to home in an environment that is friendly and supportive. [/p][p]The Norfolk Heart Trust supports and provides us with equipment such as heart scanners, ECG machines and monitors as well as providing specialist training for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals within the field of cardiac care. [/p][p]Our cardiology department at the N&N is one of only 69 hospital trusts in the UK that offers emergency life saving treatment for a heart attack. Our primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) service is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a dedicated on call and ward team. We have specific angiography theatres with state of the art monitoring and imaging equipment where we complete angioplasties (also known as PCI's), pacemaker and internal cardioverting defibrillator (ICD) implants and electrophysiology studies. Our department also covers the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and Kilverstone ward in which a team of skilled nurses, doctors and healthcare assistants ensure care for patients in the days following a heart attack and many other cardiac illnesses.[/p][p]Cardiology is extremely lucky to have the dedicated team we do, filled with consultants, registrars, SHOs, nurses, radiographers, specialised cardiac physiologists, healthcare assistants, occupational therapist, physiotherapists, housekeepers and ward clerks. This is why, as a team we would like to complete this walk to raise awareness of cardiology as a whole and to raise money for the Norfolk Heart Trust.[/p]
