Team story

[p]We did it!!!   At 2am on Thursday 8 September Nicki Gwynn-Jones reached out and touched a rock under the lighthouse at Cap Gris Nez.  14 hours and 21 minutes after leaving the beach in Dover we made it to France. Phew![/p][p]Many thanks for your support for what we did - swimming across the English Channel as a four-person relay team. It was exciting and daunting at the same time![/p] [p]Our team, the Red Hot Chilly Penguins, is Nicki Gwyn-Jones, Greg Prance, Nick Jones and me, Jerry Angrave.  [/p] [p]We're supporting two charities that are close to my heart and I'm immensely grateful to the team for that.  One is the Fragile X Society, who provide incredible practical and emotional support to families affected by someone with the learning disorder. That includes my 13-year old son, Charlie.[/p] [p]The second charity is the school Charlie goes to, Bettridge in Cheltenham. The staff there provide an amazing environment for kids who have severe or profound learning difficulties. It is both inspiring and humbling to see how the school creates such positive outcomes.  The money we raise will be split equally between the two charities. [/p] [p]On the relay we swam an hour at a time. For the things we could control our preparation paid off - putting in the miles and hours, most of it in the sea, unheated pools or lakes. We started in perfect weather but by nightfall in the shipping lanes it was choppy, challenging and slow-going. We had a few jellyfish stings and getting back in each time was 'interesting'. But, the thought of those who we're trying to help was a genuine inspiration to keep going. We just had to get on with it; the way people with physical and mental difficulties manage their lives is a real inspiration and put whatever discomfort we had into perspective. [/p] [p]I can't thank you enough for your support. Both charities have also asked to pass on their thanks, it will make a difference to them and that is quite special. Thank you. [/p][p]Thanks for visiting our page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][p]Jerry Angrave[/p][p]Nicki Gwynn-Jones[/p][p]Nick Jones[/p][p]Greg Prance .[/p]
