<p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">The main aim for taking part in the Devizes-Westminster canoe marathon has been to raise awareness of the issues facing seafarers today, particularly in light of the horrendous piracy problem. We have been delighted by the response from local media and humbled by articles such as&nbsp;<a style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; color: #08abe1; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" title="Marine Cafe" href="http://marine-cafe.com/mcblog/?p=3742" target="_blank">this</a>&nbsp;from maritime bloggers.&nbsp; Our goal was to support leading maritime charities, The&nbsp;<a style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; color: #08abe1; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" title="Mission to Seafarers" href="http://coracleonline.us1.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=c347c47c5d37b94f7db7898d5&amp;id=126c85fc74&amp;e=a03b27008e" target="_blank">Mission to Seafarers</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; color: #08abe1; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" title="Seafarers UK" href="http://coracleonline.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c347c47c5d37b94f7db7898d5&amp;id=6bd53f1790&amp;e=a03b27008e" target="_blank">Seafarers UK</a>, by raising sponsorship&nbsp;and we thank you for supporting them and us.</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">We have been training very hard for the event for several months now, battling through the harshest winter for many years in wetsuits and wooly hats: the River Stour has more often than not been a cold and unforgiving training ground. If the old man who encouraged us (and, to be honest, laughed quite a bit) on witnessing our first outing in the boat (in an hour we travelled about 2 yards and capsized countless times into the frozen river!) could see our progress, I think that he would be amazed. We have covered a LOT of miles in the boat and in our running shoes&hellip;&nbsp; We have literally come a very long way.</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">The DW isn&rsquo;t acknowledged as being the toughest canoe race in the world for nothing though. It requires a number of elements to come together for the team effort to succeed. We have been fortunate enough to have had phenomenal support: particularly from our families, from DW regular Jeremy Hutchinson of Dauntsey&rsquo;s school, and of course, from those of you who stepped up and sponsored us.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">But&hellip;. I am very sad to say that disaster has struck our campaign.</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">After an unfortunate series of incidents during a very hard warm up race from Pewsey to Newbury, Oli has made the difficult, but ultimately right decision to withdraw. This has not been an easy choice, but I completely support him in coming to that conclusion. Carrying any type of injury / problem into an event like the DW could be not only short-sighted, but also potentially dangerous and irresponsible&hellip;</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Finding a new partner at this stage, and then coming together as a potentially successful team, isn&rsquo;t feasible with the time left before the race, which leaves us no option but to pull out altogether.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">I am sorry to everyone who has been so supportive and particularly to those who sponsored us. Your sponsorship WILL still make a difference: it will still support the seafarers who face such ghastly treatment if captured by pirates whilst delivering commodities and goods for our pleasure and for that I thank you. Those of you who did sponsor us will also have received an email from me offering refunds on your donations, should you wish.</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">As for me and the DW&hellip; There&rsquo;s always next year&hellip;&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">+ +&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>April 23rd is Easter Saturday. What will you be doing?</strong> Relaxing with your family and friends in preparation for a chocolate fest on Sunday? Not so for James Tweed and Oliver Wigdahl who will take part in the Devizes Westminster International Canoe Race (DW). <span class="s1">http://www.dwrace.org.uk</span>&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">The challenge is one of the ultimate tests of endurance and has been described as the Mount Everest of canoe races and we&nbsp;will use it as an opportunity to raise money for those in need by&nbsp;supporting leading maritime welfare charities, The Mission to Seafarers and Seafarers UK.</p> <p class="p2">The race starts in the market town of Devizes, Wiltshire and from there we will paddle in a K2 racing kayak along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading where we join the Thames, and then it&rsquo;s on to Westminster Bridge. In addition to the 125 miles (around 90,000 strokes) we have 77 locks to portage around and will be trying to keep upright against the many possible adverse weather conditions as sleep depravation plays its part. Oh, and more thing... Neither of us has done anything like this before!</p> <p class="p2">We hope to raise a significant amount of money to support seafarers in the face of the horrendous piracy situation at the moment. Piracy is a significant problem for the world, but whilst many people are worried about the economic impact that these criminals are causing, we want to remember the human element. Seafarers being held captive for months, being tortured and even killed. We want to raise awareness and money to support them. The IMO have declared World Maritime Day 2011 as &lsquo;Piracy - Orchestrating the Response&rsquo; and this challenge aims to support the UN initiative in a practical way.</p> <p class="p2">&ldquo;Without seafarers, half the world would freeze and the other half starve, so it is fantastic when people like James and Oli&nbsp; step up for them. Please give the dynamic duo all your support. Seafarers deliver - and so should we!', said the Mission's Jane Spence.</p> <p class="p2">To follow us, please keep an eye on the blog: www.coracletimepursuit.tumblr.com</p>
