Team story

[p]Welcome to the fundraising site for Challenge Mallorca 2015.[/p][p]TEAM:[/p][p]Nick Frankel-Pollen, Daniel Frankel-Pollen, Simon Frankel-Pollen, Ian Southern, Adam Townley, Emma Glatman, Nicola Taffler, Johann Whittaker, Ben Davis, Dan Berryman, Dave Nunn, Tom Rose, Natalie Behan, Alex Shaw and Stuart Freeman.[/p][p]Lisa Southern together with her brothers Daniel and Simon Frankel-Pollen, have organised this challenge following their mother, Raena Frankel-Pollen's diagnosis 2 years ago with PCA (Posterior Cortical Atrophy), a form of early onset Alzheimer's Disease.  We are embarking upon a sponsored bike ride in Mallorca on 16th May 2015 to help raise desperately needed funds.[/p][p]We are fortunate to have put together a team of 20 plus enthusiastic cyclists who are prepared to give up their time and push themselves to the limit, by taking on a very challenging cycle course around the island.  We will be cycling on treacherous and hilly terrain, covering up to 80 miles in just one day.[/p][p]PCA has only started to be diagnosed in recent years and commonly occurs between ages 50 and 65. It is very hard to diagnose and there is no current cure at this time, although Raena is taking part in significant and hopefully groundbreaking trials and medication.[/p][p]There are more than 520,000 people in the UK with Alzheimers disease.[/p][p]PCA is a progressive degenerative condition that often goes undiagnosed (the amount of diagnosed patients in the UK can be counted in the hundreds) and it can easily be misdiagnosed. As a result, it is has not been widley researched as and that is why we want to raise badly need funds to help combat this disease.[/p][p]Raena has experienced difficulties performing every day activities, such as getting dressed, watching telly or reading a book. She has had to stop driving due to her peripheral vision being severely impacted and her short term memory has also been compromised. She has good days and bad but is always positive and we are hopeful that the research that she is taking part in will result in her and many others like her being able to maintain their current level of health for as long as possible without degenerating quickly and with severe effect as can often be the case. Most importantly we hope that eventually a cure may be found and our target of £20k will go a long way to continue research.[/p][p]We want to do something special to raise money for the Raena Frankel-Pollen PCA Fund, via the National Brain Appeal that will go directly to the team of researchers at London's UCLH Hospital, who are working tirelessly to help find a cure for this devastating illness.[/p][p]All the team would be so grateful if you would sponsor us for this worthwhile cause and with your contribution we can make a significant difference in the fight against Alzheimers and particularly PCA.[/p][p]We aim to raise at least £20,000 so please do forward this link to anyone you think might wish to sponsor us.[/p][p]With thanks from Lisa, Daniel and Simon and of course our wonderful cycling team ![/p]
