My story

[p]Hi! My name is Dan O'Connor and I’ll be taking on the London Marathon for Sparkle Malawi on 3rd October 2021! – thanks for stopping by my fundraising page.[/p][p]I'm incredibly honoured (but also petrified!) to take on this challenge. I've been supporting Sparkle Malawi for three years through Cornelius Group, and I’ve seen first-hand what a huge difference the charity makes to the lives of children and communities. That’s why I’m asking for your help as I aim to reach my 5K target - and I'm extremely grateful for your support![/p][p]To tell you a little more about Sparkle Malawi, founder Sarah Brook was volunteering at an orphanage in Malawi during her gap year. After 6 weeks she became desperately unwell and was rushed to a local hospital. When she arrived, a large queue of people, many of which had travelled for miles, let Sarah go to the front of the queue. [/p][p]The doctors explained to her friend that she required surgery immediately, but with a high rate of HIV at the hospital and limited sterile equipment, the only other choice was to travel a further 90 minutes and risk the chance of dying on route. Sarah made it to Blantyre hospital and spent many weeks recovering after a successful operation. Unfortunately, some of those that had allowed her to the front of the queue had not been so lucky, including children.[/p][p]This changed Sarah’s life forever. She made a promise that she would return to Malawi and make a difference to at least one child’s life. During the last 12 years, Sarah’s dream of helping just ‘one child’ has turned into an organisation that now helps many orphans and vulnerable children.[/p][p]The Malawi site is situated in a village just outside of Zomba. The community faces extreme poverty and low rates of education. Local communities struggle for food and most of the children that attend Sparkle are suffering from malnutrition. [/p][p]The high rate of HIV means that many of the children attending Sparkle are orphans. The charity gives them the opportunity along with an education to further themselves and create a brighter future. The Sparkle Foundation is a community-based organisation that also offers food and medical support to those that need it the most – and thats why I'm so passionate to support their work.[/p][p]If running a marathon wasn't already enough of a challenge - I suffer with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which means that physical stamina does not come naturally! I've suffered with CFS for over 15 years now and learned my body's limits - and I’ll be pushing way beyond them! [/p][p]So as with many of the runners on the day, I'll be relying a lot on my mental strength and the support of every single person reading this. This, along with the knowledge that my efforts will help to change lives in Malawi, will carry me across the finish line. Please donate if you can, and help us support this life-changing organisation.[/p]
