My story

[p]It's happening! Track our progress with the link below.[/p][p]https://facebook.com/drawersndoors[/p][p][br][/p][p]Drawers N Doors is a small business in Flitwick, Bedfordshire. Planning a fundraising event for a few charities.[/p][p]Our aim is to walk 100km in 48 hours and we are trying to raise as much as we can for our chosen charities.[/p][p]The event is setting off from the east coast (just north of Holbeach) and finishing at Gaddesby in Leicestershire. It will be taking place on the 14th and 15th of September 2019.[/p][p]We are trying our best to raise £10,000 to split equally among our chosen charities. Anything you can give is extremely appreciated.😊[/p][p][br][/p][p]Take a look at the route we are walking below![/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/349062020/"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]Jerome's Story[/p][p]For those who don't know. I suffer from Crohn's disease.[/p][p]Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. It causes me daily pain and can greatly affect your physical and mental health. As the disease has affected most of my large and small intestine I had to have an ileostomy in March 2019 (photo attached below).[/p][p]During my recovery, the support I have received has been outstanding from friends, family, Louise from Crohn's Fighting and Crohn's and Colitis UK. Now that I have recovered from the operation, I want to make it my goal as part of a team to raise as much money as possible as our way of saying thank you, by walking over 100km in 2 days on the 14th September 2019.[/p][p]I really want to take this opportunity to thank my partner in crime! My beautiful wife Katy, your support for me over the years has been huge and at my lowest points through this, you have really helped me. So thank you.[/p][p]There are many people I need to thank whilst I was going through this. You know who you are. Thank you![/p][p]#getyourbellyout[/p][p][br][/p][p]Andy's Story[/p][p]For those of you who know me, you will probably know my dad, Brian.[/p][p]He's been by my side and in my corner since I can remember. Every Wednesday he will shuffle down to the showroom carrying a bag of doughnuts and a smile for all.[/p][p]Sadly he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2016, the same year my wife's father was also diagnosed with this condition.[/p][p]Prior to this, I knew very little about Parkinson's, how it affected peoples lives and how common it is. It is estimated that 145,000 people in the UK were diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2018.[/p][p]People associate Parkinson's with severe shaking/tremors but there are many more symptoms that affect daily living including seizures, balance problems causing falls, memory loss, depression, anxiety and severe tiredness (as shown below).[/p][p]Better treatment starts with better research and therefore this requires more funding to one day hopefully find a cure.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Cancer's Story[/p][p]Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer, that's more than 990 every day and 363,000 new cancer cases every year.[/p][p]Every four minutes someone in the UK dies from cancer, that's around 450 every day and 164,000 people lose their lives to cancer every year. Cancer accounts for more than a quarter (28%) of all deaths in the UK.[/p][p]1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime.[/p][p]Because of the work that Cancer Research UK is doing the cancer survival rate is improving and has doubled in the last 40 years. It is now at an all-time high of 50%.[/p][p]The more money that is raised and the more funding Cancer Research UK receives brings the day cancer is cured closer.[/p][p]Most of us have been affected by cancer in some way or another, and if you haven't there is a very good chance you may.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Alzheimer’s Story[/p][p]Dementia devastates lives. By 2021, 1 million people will be living with the condition. But dementia won't win. Until the day we find a cure, Alzheimer's Society will be here for anyone affected by dementia - wherever they are, whatever they're going through. Everything we do is informed and inspired by them.[/p][p]We are the UK's leading dementia charity. Every day, we work tirelessly to find new treatments and, ultimately, a cure for dementia. We provide expert information, training and support services to all those who need our help. And we are creating a more dementia-friendly society so people with the condition can live without fear and prejudice. [/p][p]Let's take on dementia together. Volunteer. Donate. Campaign for change. Whatever you do, unite with us against dementia.[/p][p][br][/p]
