Team story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting our page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. [/p][p]Over a quiet dinner in Copenhagen a few colleagues discussed driving holidays and cars, and from this came the idea of driving to work to raise money for Acts of Hope. The team will consist of 3 cars and 6 people, who will toegther take the challenge of driving different routes from Bedfont Lakes near Heathrow to Copenhagan's Little Mermaid.[lt]br /[gt][lt]br /[gt]Our aim is to raise £6k of sponsorship between us for the school in Bangalore supported by the Acts of Hope Charity.[lt]br /[gt][lt]br /[gt]The challenge started on the 28th Sept with some competitions along the way [/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]The ACTS OF HOPE Trust reg.108001[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]The Acts of Hope High School provides free education to children living in the urban slums of India. We believe that education is their only escape from poverty, desperation and exploitation.[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]The Acts of Hope School in Kasavanhalli has been working in the slum villages on the outskirts of Bangalore since 1999. We now have more than 400 children in the school. Every day they are brought on the school bus from their villages to take lessons in: English, Mathematics, Science, Information Technology, Social Studies, local languages and local culture.[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]The Need[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]The urban poor have little state support. Their average family income does not cover the escalating cost of food and rent and education is very expensive. Without Acts of Hope these children would have no education. They would be trapped in grinding poverty and used for cheap labor.[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]The School[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]The school started when a couple from the UK were moved by the plight of the children of migrant laborers attracted to Bangalore. They immediately bought a small plot of land and built a nursery school.[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]Since then the school has expanded, built a team of qualified local teachers and added classrooms and buildings to accommodate the growing number of children. There is no selection policy. We take as many of the most disadvantaged children as we can.[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]ACTS OF HOPE provides the children with: their books, transport, their uniforms, lunch, sports and an annual medical examinations.[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]It’s Working[/p][lt]p class="Body"[gt]AoH is licensed by the State of Karnataka to teach to the 10th Standard, the final year of high school. So far 27 children have sat the state board exams. Pass rates are excellent. [/p][p]In August 2013 the second AoH’ graduate made it to university. She passed her first year with distinction and is well on her way to a degree in Engineering and Technology at Bangalore’s East Point College.[/p][p]Drive Update[/p][p]After leaving Bedfont lakes at 9am, all teams made it to the Chunnel on time and boarded the train heading for France.  The race was then on with all cars heading to Bremen for an overnight stay for two of the teams, a dinner stop for the third team before they headed on to the Ferry at Travemunde for a 3am sailing to Sweden.[/p][p]With valuable points at stake all teams were on the look-out for silly road names, bottles of ginger beer, chicken sandwiches and people in uniform, as well as seeing who could hit their top speed (on the de-restricted autobahn of course!).  While John and Richard wondered what all the strange camera flashes were, Martin ambled along at a nice sedate pace in the Lotus.[/p][p]After several hours of driving all teams encountered the first traffic jam, rather fortuitously this gave two of the teams the opportunity to get a photo of the funniest name sign (see pics!), the traffic jam however caused some concern for Team Lotus who were anxious at what the heat might do to the car, ended up driving with hazards on along the hard shoulder just incase.[/p][p]Team Lotus had one slight hiccup when they realised the lights weren't working, a small fix later and the lights popped up so off to Bremen they headed.[/p][p]Team John was first to arrive in Bremen, with Team Richard an hour later, and Team Lotus a few minutes behind, it just goes to show going slow and following the map beats going fast and getting lost.[/p][p]After a swift dinner, Team Richard and Team John headed to bed (separately by all accounts) whilst Team Lotus had a two hour drive to catch the 3am Ferry to Sweden.[/p][p]After several hours sleep on the ferry and only a few in the hotel, all teams were now heading to the end point of Copenhagen via 3 different routes, the excitement was mounting as to who would arrive first... Team Lotus got off the Ferry at 11:30 and had 30 miles to drive, by then Team John and Team Richard were all close to Copenhagen...[/p][p]Team John arrived first, with Team Richard arriving 2 minutes later, Team Lotus came in 40 minutes later, delighted that the 42 year old Lotus had made the journey without any hiccups.[/p][p]The winning results are as follows –[/p][lt]table style="width: 427px;
