Team story

[p]E3 Recruitment ran the Leeds 10K Corporate Challenge on Sunday 10[sup]th[/sup] July for the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund which supports the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit at the Leeds General Infirmary.[/p] [p][/p] [p]The charity is close to E3 Recruitment as two of the team’s children were born with heart conditions and thanks to the care and support provided by Leeds Congenital Heart Unit, can now lead normal lives.[/p] [p][/p] [p]The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund has already provided millions of pounds worth of funding to the Unit which has provided:[/p] [ul] [li]Cutting edge equipment [/li] [li]Ward facilities [/li] [li]Staff positions & training[/li] [li]Family accommodation & support [/li] [li]Research posts & projects [/li] [/ul] [p][/p] [p]All this additional funding ensures the Unit can remain open following previous reviews to reduce the number of hospitals carrying out children’s heart surgery due to funding. If this was to happen families in the region would have to travel to Bristol or Newcastle for appointments.[/p] [p][/p] [p]The charity is now raising funds for a revolutionary children’s heart theatre, based at the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit, which will reduce surgery wait times and provide better equipment for more complex operations.[/p][p][/p] [p]Here's how Leeds Congenital Heart Unit and the Children's Heart Surgery Fund have helped Nick and Laura from E3 Recruitment: [/p][p][/p] [p]Nick’s story: My daughter Amelia was born by emergency section on the 22[sup]nd[/sup] November 2014 and had to have heart surgery at nine days old. She was born with two conditions, a hole between the two pumping chambers of her heart (VSD) and a narrowing of her Aorta. The narrowing meant that she was getting no blood to her lower body. This was only discovered when we were about to be discharged from hospital after the section on day three as the doctors could not find any femoral pulses. She was immediately put onto a drug to open up a small artery and increase her blood flow and we were transferred to Leeds General Infirmary and placed on the high dependency unit with 24 hour care until her operation and for a week after. She still has a VSD which is monitored regularly but the operation saved her life. We spent three weeks in hospital where we stayed in accommodation provided by CHSF.[/p] [p][/p] [p]Laura’s story: My daughter Jessica has a heart condition called Complete Heart Block, which is when the impulse generated in the SA node in the atrium of the heart doesn’t propagate to the ventricles. A complication was picked up at the routine 20 week anomaly scan, and I was then transferred to the Fetal Cardiac Investigation Unit at LGI who confirmed the prognosis. For the remaining pregnancy I was scanned fortnightly and on 3[sup]rd[/sup] December at week 34 Jessica was delivered via elective c section as they didn’t want to risk her heart beat dropping further and losing her. She was operated on four hours after delivery to pace her heart, the operation was a success and she spent a week in LGI before being transferred to Calderdale for a further two weeks. Thanks to the team at LGI and the amazing work the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund does we have a healthy full of life 18 month old little girl. Jessica has quarterly check-up appointments at Leeds and she will have to undergo further procedures at different stages in her life.[/p][p][/p][p]Children's Heart Seurgery Fund - Registered Charity No.1148359[/p]
