Team story

[p]We’re a charitable social enterprise committed not only to environmental outcomes through waste diversion, but also making sure that people from all backgrounds across Edinburgh have access to our services, and that lives are improved through reuse and repair.[/p][p]We support Social Bite’s mission to end homelessness, and as a team we wholeheartedly throw ourselves behind their efforts to achieve real and lasting change through their ‘Housing First’ campaign.[/p][p]This year our team are taking part in the Sleep in the Park event in Edinburgh on 8th December and want to raise £3,000 to support Social Bite’s mission to end homelessness in Scotland. [/p][p]We have worked alongside Social Bite and other organisations in Edinburgh to deliver training in repair and reuse for people who have experienced homelessness with the aim to help create and maintain household essentials. In addition, a proportion of IT and furniture which is donated to us is allocated as starter packs for people coming out of homelessness through our #RemakeADifference initiative.[/p][p]Please donate whatever you can to support our team, and help Social Bite achieve their mission.[/p][p]Edinburgh Remakery and Social Bite[/p][p]The Remakery began working with [url=https://www.facebook.com/socialbitebusiness/?__tn__=K-R&eid=ARDOHWP6xegenpCYgVidf-hzh6poXpbHVTJ3i6deFIvgKxiI4I9xOZxKECvWfoxKl6ajB-oZxfg5k_7F&fref=mentions&__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARCyrDH9cr0erOuXRJYYBGfcddJaIgnX2J-CgiGmkzyDQR6FKEbZkCShUOHl7NjUJM7ua-qdZRprZ5_a1IhOoQYpX8cg4UD9GMhVw6VQG3QOvis9g6eakLfRWwndAKGXU0-9Ak0QCowNt2lmeNBjjVKd5gVoLubj87wI1c6aHN8xVGr9R6tchKR0CgXc_H-0Kabv7BUx5gh8U5zioyZt3UW7Reldgpm2bwfYFYwz5_Lgu-eANw6AgqKqjZMMaSddFOQf6qEvtI1oo5NpUp_mpKxWnaqKSkccGL5S0bTo6Wg64HDWPaQLxxtul4gFOD_bY7Ph8b_Dejga4zf2F5DUttvIHVbU]Social Bite earlier this year when Rico, a supported Social Bite team member, joined us on a placement. Rico had just moved into a flat after a long period of homelessness and, although he had some essential goods, there were still household items he really needed.[/p][p]Rico didn’t have the money to buy anything new but was excited to learn how to make and repair things himself - which is exactly what the Remakery loves doing! We took Rico on and he has been with us ever since, helping us with furniture repairs and refurbishments; and he has come away with a whole bunch of new skills and the ability to remake his own belongings. We've loved having Rico work with us and hope he'll be here for a long time to come![/p][p]Later in the year another Social Bite supported employee, Dana, joined the Remakery team! Like Rico, Dana was homeless last year and living in a woman’s hostel suffering from an ongoing battle with mental health issues. Dana was aware from Rico how much he enjoyed his placement at Edinburgh Remakery, and shared his passion for being creative and learning new skills. Dana had also recently gone into social housing and loved making her flat a proper home; the first she had had in a while. [/p][p]Dana began working with the Edinburgh Remakery and alongside Rico on a refurbishment project to transform an area in a library, upcycling and reusing items to create a unique and inspiring space. She loved this so much she requested an ongoing placement with us at the Remakery, and we were more than happy to have her on board. The environment and placement has helped greatly with Dana’s mental health and we really see so much potential in her and an excellent standard of work despite her mental health at times being debilitating.[/p][p]“I have been in awe with how teaching one of our supported staff has impacted on how he thinks about the world or reusing. He had unknowingly already been reusing items for a long time while he was a rough sleeper and homeless. Nothing went to waste. He just didn’t connect the dots until he got to know more about the circular economy and ethos of what these great influencers do in Leith and the wider communities. Rico by hand crafted items for his flat which was saved from heading to landfill. He takes greater pride in his flat because he has a story to tell about the items he made for it. I love the fact he was given this opportunity and he is learning away from Social Bite new skills in a different workplace.” – Barbara Haig, Social Impact Team at Social Bite[/p][p][/p][p]Images show Rico and Dana speaking at the 2017 Sleep in the Park event, sharing their experiences of homelessness; Rico, Rob (Remakery CEO) and Barbara Haig of Social Bite outside the Edinburgh Remakery; and Dana working with Remakery team member, Paul, in the library refurbishment project.[/p]
