My story

[p]When we started the ELIE organisation & our EVP sanctuary project 15 years ago, we wanted to not only change the elephant industry here in Cambodia, by improving welfare and care for Cambodia’s remaining captive elephants. We also wanted to support the traditional Bunong elephant owners who really do care for their elephants, but are struggling to look after them for numerous reasons, for example a lack of forest left to graze their elephants, or no one to look after them. Over the years the EVP has provided an alternative option to selling to companies or working their elephants in exhausting industries, by allowing families to bring their elephants to rest or retire at the sanctuary.[/p][p]This is definitely the case for the traditional owners of two very special elephants Doe (Gee Bloh) & Darling (Bong Kong). We have known these elephants for over 8 years, where they have visited the EVP three times on increasingly longer and longer rest periods, in 2013 for 6 months, 2015 for 1 year, and 2017 for 2 years.[/p][p]This last week has been a flurry of activity and planning since we first received the call from the owners asking for ELIE’s help. It had appeared that they had had a nasty incident with a scam artist who had tried to sell both Doe and Darling without their consent after initially renting them to this individual for three months. [/p][p]This is a major undertaking at a time of real financial pressure. But we could not bear thinking that this family could have had their elephants stolen and sold to a lifetime of servitude and slavery under the guise of ’entertainment’ in the countries capital Phnom Penh or elsewhere.[/p][p]They now realise that EVP sanctuary is the best place for their elephants and really want our help. Even though this has been an extremely difficult year, we really don't want to turn our backs on our cause and our mission, to support these amazing elephants and their families. [/p][p]But for this we need YOUR help![/p][p]To support the family with their current situation, we need to pay the compensation for the elephants for 6 months up front, so they can return to EVP. So we desperately need $3000 right now.[/p][p]We then still also need your help fundraising to keep going throughout this pandemic crisis. We have dramatically reduced our monthly operations during the Covid crisis. It is costing us roughly $15,000-18,000 USD per month to keep the sanctuary running, the elephants fed, mahouts paid, a mobile vet team on the road and to support the community through this crisis. We have been offered $4100 USD per month critical relief funds from World Animal Protection till Sept 2021, and we receive $1000 per month from individual elephant sponsors - but without tourists income, we still need to find the rest.[/p][p]Our goal of fundraising at the moment is to sustain and bolster ELIE's innovative elephant welfare, community support and forest protection programs already in place. The loss in income from wildlife-based tourism programs at the EVP due to COVID-19 has severely impacted our organization's fiscal and staff capacity to continue these successful programs. With the overall goal of these programs already to support long-term care for the elephants, vet outreach programs and to create resiliency, well-being and sustainability within the communities we work, bolstering these programs with the funds from donors, while the tourism industry recovers, is critical moving ahead.[/p][p]Help us help them![/p][p]Thanks from all of us at ELIE & the Elephant Valley Project[/p][p]Donations made here will be kindly processed (in UK pounds) and sent to ELIE & the EVP via our partner organisation, Globalteer, a UK registered Charity. If you are a UK taxpayer, please do not forget to gift aid your donations.[/p]
