My story

[p]Last year during the summer holidays I cycled from Farnham to Bristol over a weekend and raised money for the Scottish Cot Death Trust. When I finished the ride I felt I could do another day of cycling so Dad came up with the idea of riding to Paris. My Mum did the same ride in May with some of her friends and Dad supported them.[/p][p]I think Dad also sees this as a way to get me away from computer games and arguing with Freya and Miles for three days. The hot weather looks like it is coming to an end just in time, but we might also get some rain on our last day. If you want a live weather forecast then my Dad's twitter and Instagram are both @nickhanmer where we will be posting updates when we stop for Dad's coffee and my cake.[/p][p]I'm raising money for the Future Leaders Underprivileged Children’s Centre (UCC) https://futureleadersuccghana.wordpress.com It is a drop-in education and welfare centre for children from backgrounds of poverty in Ghana and is a project my school - St Peter's C of E School in Farnham - supports through fundraising. The kids also love and play a lot of football just like me.[/p][p]Here is a little about the project... Future Leaders UCC helps children who would, under their current circumstances, be unable to attend government school as a result of a lack of financial means and/or developmental needs. Whilst the Ghanaian government has made schooling’free’ to all children of primary age, they are still required to purchase uniforms, books, sports kit and in some cases make contributions for the school’s ICT provision. With nearly 30% of families in Ghana living on less than £1 these costs prove to be too much and therefore their children stay at home and in the face of such adversity are struggling to achieve their dreams of attending school and gaining meaningful employment. Future Leaders UCC offers free education and provides all of the children with the equipment they need to be able to learn. Once children have studied at the UCC for a prolonged period they will also be given a uniform.[/p][p]Many of the children are brought to the centre by a relative or family friend struggling to afford basic care and support. As the work of the centre is becoming increasingly popular more children are being brought from further and further away in order to receive free teaching, the waiting list now numbers over 160 children. In addition, Billa makes regular visits to many of the hotspots of children living rough around the city and in local neighbourhoods to offer the chance of education and care in a safe environment.[/p][p]Over the last 17 years it has been Billa’s dream to have a permanent home for the UCC. Over the years different temporary sites have been rented to run the project.[/p][p]They are now at the very exciting stage of buying a plot of land and looking to build a purpose built building for the work of the UCC. This task is going to require a huge amount of Fundraising.[/p][p]Thank you for sponsoring me and for helping me to reach my fundraising target for UCC. [/p][p]Zach x[/p]
