My story

[p]Breaking news: I just signed up for a full IronMan, but to give myself a fighting chance of finishing shall be doing this one in Vitoria-Gasteiz in Vais Vasco (that's the Basque country) on 14 July - 24 weeks, 6 days not that I'm counting![/p][p]During 2018 (and now 2019) I have been and will be 'competing' (that is, participating) in a series of events to raise money for bone cancer research and care after a close friend of our son Joel, Tom Stead, passed away on Boxing Day 2017 aged 19.[/p][p]Regular readers will know that in theory this challenge, and it has been, was to culminate in my third Weymouth Ironman 70.3 in September. Well I did recover from an MCL injury to allow me to complete that, notwithstanding waves, rain, wind, crash and puncture! 6h57m not a record breaker though ;-(. And then, after returning from back-to-back half marathon (sub 2hr) and mini-tri (PB) in Lanzarote I tried to do another marathon in November and got injured which killed off the year. Hence the full IM commitment![/p][p]To refresh newbies, the 'season' kicked off in earnest after some long evenings on the turbo and the pavement with the Liege-Bastogne-Liege 158km Challenge ride in Belgium in April, the one with 2700m of climbing - 7 hours in the saddle fuelled by great company and roadside waffles, both needed to tae your mind off the 20% climb and the oncoming traffic. Remember that hot Bank Holiday Monday in May? Well next up was first ever full marathon in Milton Keynes - flat, allegedly. Sub-5 hours felt like a small victory at the time. After a couple of seaside sprint events at Sandbanks and Boscombe then did New Forest Half with the emapsite team and much to my surprise put in a PB (1:54:03)! [/p][p]Everything raised will go to the charities named - Tom (https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-display/showROSomeoneSpecialPage?pageUrl=TomStead) and in the wake of his heartbreaking story this is the very least I can do to contribute to better outcomes for those affected by osteosarcoma. I know you can help me eventually beat that target.....[/p][p]I'll be doing my bit, now you do yours.....[/p][p][br][/p]
