My story

[p]I’ve stupidly signed up to run (stumble) 100km over two days, so please make it worthwhile and chuck some money towards a charity that I care strongly about: Compassion in World Farming.[/p][p]CiWF was formed 50 years ago by a British Farmer who became appalled by modern, intensive ‘factory’ farming. It is a global movement to expose the truth about the food we eat, and to fight for better food and farming. For those that want to read in depth about the Charity then please head to: https://www.ciwf.org.uk/factory-farming/[/p][p]As a society we are blissfully ignorant to the pain and suffering that we subject billions of animals to annually. We object to domestic animal abuse, yet we’ve brainwashed ourselves into believing that slaughtering and dismembering innocent farm animals is fine, simply because we like the taste and it's therefore convenient not to dwell on the matter. Please have a quick watch of this if you have moment: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/farm-climate-change-animals-drone-footage-video-a8804661.html [/p][p]I know how busy everyone is, so I’ll keep it to a few bullet points that I hope will spark some thought:[/p][p] 50 billion animals are factory farmed every year to produce cheap meat, milk and eggs. Treated as commodities, animals are often raised in intense confinement.[/p][p] Factory farming is not just bad for farm animals. It’s dangerous, unfair and dirty, with impacts ranging from climate change to biodiversity loss and disease to food insecurity.[/p][p] The EU recognises farm animals as sentient beings but despite this, tens of billions of animals endure short, miserable lives in factory farms where the priority is profit above all else.[/p][p] To save space, factory-farmed animals are crammed together in barren pens, crates or cages causing huge amounts of stress and injuries.[/p][p] To reduce these injuries, mutilation has become commonplace. Animals have their teeth clipped, tails docked and beaks trimmed - all usually carried out without pain relief.[/p][p] Fast-growing, high-yielding animals are encouraged through selective breeding and concentrated feed. This puts animals at risk of problems such as lameness, broken bones and organ failure.[/p][p] Factory farming produces vast quantities of greenhouse gases - more than the global transport sector.[/p][p] Factory farming pollutes environments, contaminating the natural world with a range of potentially lethal toxins.[/p][p]From animal rights activist, Gary Yourofsky: "Do you really think there is such a thing as ‘humane’ slaughter? Besides psychological and physical abuse, torture, dismemberment and murder, what else do you think happens to animals inside of a slaughterhouse? And if you think there is such a thing as humane slaughter, I’m curious, do you also think there is such a thing as humane rape? Humane child molestation? Humane slavery?"[/p][p] Every year in America alone, without mercy, we murder 10 billion land animals, and 18 billion marine animals. Not for health, survival, sustenance or self-defence. People eat meat, cheese, milk and eggs for 4 reasons: Habit, Tradition, Convenience, Taste[/p][p] Contrary to political and religious doctrine, animals do not belong to us. They are not commodities. They are not property. They are not inanimate objects that can’t think and feel.[/p][p] If we all understand that animals use their eyes to see, ears to hear, noses to smell, mouths to eat, legs to walk, feathers to fly, fins to swim etc. it is perplexing that most people don’t believe that they can also use their brains to think, feel, and be aware of how terrifying and miserable their lives are. i.e. every body part of an animal functions just like it’s supposed to, except the brain?[/p][p] 65% of the worlds grains are set aside to feed 53 billion land animals each year, instead of using those crops for six and a half billion people.[/p][p] Cows make milk for their babies and for their babies alone. They don’t make milk for baby elephants, baby orangutans, baby hedgehogs or adult humans. This body of ours has absolutely no need for cow milk, like it has absolutely no need for giraffe milk.[/p][p]Anyway, sorry for rant, please donate generously - it's for a very good cause.[/p][p]Cheers,[/p][p]Freddie[/p][p][br][/p]
