My story

[p]I am running the London Marathon again. In 2021 I am raising funds for Friends of Vellore UK, and in particular for their project with Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore in the Jawadhi Hills. [/p][p]Please note that Virgin Money Giving closes on 30th November 2021. Any donations after this date should be made directly to Friends of Vellore UK. Their bank details are: HSBC, Sort Code 40-02-13, Account number 41865986. For alternative donation methods go to Friends of Vellore's website: www.friendsofvellore.org and select donate. Please put Jawadhi Hills in the reference.[/p][p]80,000 people live in this rugged terrain in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. Their history, extreme poverty and poor road access mean that their health, literacy and development indicators are tragically low.[/p][p]Most people are small-scale subsistence farmers or land labourers. Due to poor conditions, many migrate to find seasonal farming work in nearby districts, taking the children with them who then miss school for extended periods.[/p][p]CMC’s Community Health and Development team (CHAD) are working in this area to improve health and provide development opportunities. However, they desperately need funds to make their vision for these people to live a healthy and productive life, in harmony with nature, a reality.[/p][p]Chronic malnutrition, TB, malaria, diabetes, high blood pressure, leprosy, HIV and thalassaemia are big problems along with infections, orthopaedic issues and alcoholism. CMC provides mobile clinics to the most accessible villages. They have been working in four villages helping villagers to build toilets and install clean water supplies. They run evening study centres and summer camps for the children. They have also initiated various farming income generation schemes to provide a sustainable income so young people are not tempted to migrate elsewhere. [/p][p]CMC have trained 22 young people from the villages in health care to work in their local communities increasing health awareness and are bridging the gap between the local tribal community and CMC’s Community Health and Development team. Friends of Vellore are currently funding ten health workers who are now in their second year. [/p][p]These community health workers encourage patients to attend the mobile clinic and perform independent home visits to identify and refer patients with health problems. They follow up antenatal and postnatal women, under-fives and chronic patients. They also provide health education in homes and local schools on water, sanitation, hygiene and nutrition, and motivate mothers to immunise their children.[/p][p]In 2020, the cost of this came to £9518. Please consider donating. Your donation will not only help to improve the health of these people, it also provides jobs for those who have chosen to work in community health. This sustainable income reduces the need to migrate elsewhere for work.[/p][p]Training-In these Covid times running to the workplace and a few runs from home to make up appropriate mileage, continues. The pic shows off last years Marathon T shirt, the 40th race, that raised around £7000/- for LCECU. The tutu is to lighten the mood and add to the colour.[/p][p]I will be running in London on Sunday 03 October. the start is around 1053 hours, local time. My bib number is 34420 and you can track me on the TCS app,I will activate GPS tracking about 15 minutes before the start.[/p][p]I've added a picture of my friend Surendhu Govindan,an Ultra runner who along with other members of 'Soles of Cochin', ran an Ultra in the Jawadhi/Jawadhu Hills. He is sporting the vest from that run. Unfortunately a fire accident made the Tamil Nadu State Govt officials close the event.[/p][p][br][/p]
