My story

[p]Well I am at it again. This time though I'm heading to America for the Grand to Grand ultra. This is a similar format to Marathon des Sables, but slightly longer. This is a 6 stage race, starting at the lip of the Grand Canyon and finishing at the top of the Grand Staircase: a total of 170 miles (273km) with 5,500 metres of total ascent (18,000 feet), self supported. I will have to carry everything I need to complete the event (except all my water - but it’s rationed).[/p][p]I thought long and hard about beating the charity drum again as I didn't want to be blocked by everyone bored of seeing 'all my running posts’, but recent conversations at the Army v Navy rugby from some people who don't always comment or 'like' my posts has made me realise that some people have enjoyed my journey. So here we go again. This time I chose Blesma and the Gurkha Welfare Trust.[/p][p]Neither of these charities needs any introduction, especially among my military friends. I had the absolute honour last year of meeting Duncan Slater and spending time training with him in the Institute of Naval Medicine’s heat chamber; after which, Duncan became the first ever double amputee to finish the MDS. Seeing first-hand the selfless actions of someone who was injured in active service and then found the strength to help others has made Blesma and the Walking With the Wounded charities very special to me. Blesma isn't a large charity like WWTW and doesn't have Prince Harry as the patron so it was a difficult decision, but I chose Blesma again.[/p][p]The Gurkha welfare trust is a new one for me though. I usually do a cancer charity as well as a military, but this charity came to prominence when Joanna Lumley took up the cause to fight for the rights of the Gurkhas and their families. It also supports the Gurkhas back in their communities, which have seen many natural disasters over the past few years. We have a large Gurkha community at my office, looking after the security, and these gentlemen are always professional and courteous.[/p][p]None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of my family. Sam and Megan lose me for hours during my training and Sam changed my life at the end of 2015 when things were starting to get out of control. My weight was spiralling and I failed to finish the Portsmouth coastal marathon. Sam sent me to see a sports nutritionist. It was at this point my life changed and my health and wellness improved.[/p][p][br][/p][p]You can read my Marathon des Sables Blog here.[/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BgtZUmhNMRM?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
