Team story

[p]On the 3[sup]rd[/sup] of July, I, (Charlie Homer, Colin Morrison (GAGA ambassador) and another Charlie, will be cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats via Durness (one of the most northerly points of the UK). It is roughly 900 miles, but typically it will be hard to predict the exact mileage until it’s completed.[/p][p]We aim to complete the ride in 9 days, so you don’t have to be Einstein to work out the daily average. We have been very generously donated the use of a Camper Van and that will be very ably driven by our support crew (support person) Karen Morrison, wife of Colin Morrison, another of our very special GAGA ambassadors  [/p][p]Why the detour? Well it’s not because I love cycling.  There is a group of very special girls visiting Durness for a few days from South Africa. We were going to visit them anyway so we thought we would arrive in style (until they see us in lycra).[/p][p]What are we raising funds for? Well, GAGA – Goodwill and Growth for Africa UK - is a registered charity (1092028) and works with projects and communities in South Africa and in other African countries. The aim of our work is to promote and strengthen the organisations we support. We do this in many ways.[/p][p]Whatever is raised from this bum-numbing (putting is sensitively) ride will be put towards the building and running of a safe house for abused women and children, in partnership with 1000 Hills Community Helpers. Rape and abuse is a huge problem is South Africa. In most cases the victims of rape or abuse will have to go back to the place they were attacked and live within close proximity to their attacker, which stops them speaking out. Some of the facts below expose the gravity of the problem.[/p][ul][li](www.rape.co.za) estimates that a woman born in South Africa has a greater chance of being raped than learning how to read. [/li][li]The Rape Survivor Journal (PDF; 09/01/2008): a study by Interpol, the international police agency, has revealed that South Africa leads the world in the number of rape cases. [/li][li] In 2006 a woman was raped in South Africa every 17 seconds. This survey did not include the number of child-rape victims. [/li][li]Around 200,000 children a year are raped in South Africa.[/li][li]Less than 1% of rapes end in a successful prosecution.[/li][/ul][p]During our 9 day ride an estimated 40,000+ women and 4,000+ children will be raped in South Africa. One rape is one too many. These figures are a travesty and something well worth the pain of 9 days in the saddle.[/p][p]We hope you agree. We are so grateful for your support.[/p][p]For more information about GAGA please viist our website www.gaga-uk.org [/p]
