My story

[div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=color: #000000; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;]Eight years ago my girlfriend Laura Jones was diagnosed with Stargardts disease. It was a devastating time. The walls of opportunity seemed to close around her and her dream of becoming a DJ seemed impossible along with so many other facets of life that we had taken for granted. There is no cure for Stargardts and the experts had little to offer in the way of help. They couldn't say how long it would take or whether her eye sight would go completely. The only thing she could do, they told us was eat healthily and exercise to slow its progression.[/span][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=color: #000000; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;]That Christmas I presented Laura with a very boring boyfriend-special present of a trip to run the Florence marathon later that year. It wasn't quite a nice piece of jewellery or clothes, but my reasoning was that it would keep us as healthy as possible and might keep her disease at bay for awhile. We began training but disaster struck the day after our first 10k run when I woke up with severe back pain. As the weeks passed it worsened and no amount of visits to chiros, osteos, doctors or physios could cure it. Several years passed of the most irritating pain and nothing seemed to break the deadlock until one day that is when Laura bought me a backcare yoga dvd. Within weeks of beginning to learn yoga my back cracked and healed its own way of trouble and I was finally free from this irritating condition.[/span][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=color: #000000; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;][lt]br /[gt][/span][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;][lt]span style="font-size: 12.96px;"[gt]In an attempt to pay back the favour, I will be running the London marathon along with Zeina Raad and Laura Rice in April to raise funds for Fight For Sight, a charity that raises money for eye disease related research. This will be the fifth year that Laura's friends run for the charity after Gill Dalton started the tradition in 2013. The pledge is for one or more of us to run each year to raise £50,000 over ten years with Laura joining us all on the tenth year to complete the effort.[/span][lt]/span[gt][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;][lt]span style="font-size: 12.96px;"[gt][lt]br /[gt][/span][lt]/span[gt][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;][lt]span style="font-size: 12.96px;"[gt]It is an amazing and yet difficult time for eye science. We are on the tipping point of curing so many eye diseases that could revolutionise lives the world over. In Laura's case, at the time of her diagnosis Stargardts was touted to be the first disease to be cured by first Stem Cell Research and then Gene Therapy. As yet that cure has not been achieved. Now with Trump and Brexit threatening to take the wind out of so many research initiatives,  we need [lt]span style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;"[gt]more than ever [/span]to keep funding charities like Fight For Sight.[lt]/span[gt][lt]/span[gt][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;][lt]span style="font-size: 12.96px;"[gt][lt]br /[gt][/span][lt]/span[gt][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;][lt]span style="font-size: 12.96px;"[gt]It is a horrific experience to be told you are going blind. But imagine what it will be like to cure as many of those eye diseases as possible and bring back sight to people like Laura whose everyday battle to remain positive and not be restricted by her disease is an inspiration to us all. Today Laura is a world famous touring DJ who continues to defy her disease by doing what she loves but not everyone is as lucky to have such a strong disposition as her and that's why the gift of hope to those dealing with a visual impairment is so important.[/span][lt]/span[gt][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;][lt]span style="font-size: 12.96px;"[gt][lt]br /[gt][/span][lt]/span[gt][/div] [div=color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;][span=font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;][lt]span style="font-size: 12.96px;"[gt]Thank you to everyone who supports our run this year. No amount is too big or too small.[/span][lt]/span[gt][/div] [lt]div[gt][span=font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;][lt]span style="font-size: 12.96px;"[gt][lt]br /[gt][/span][lt]/span[gt][lt]/div[gt] [lt]br /[gt]
