My story

[lt]h3[gt]Crisis At Christmas[lt]/h3[gt][p]This will be the 5th year that I've donated my time and volunteered for Crisis (the national charity for single homeless adults) and the 41st year that Crisis has been running. They run year-round work from their 'Crisis Skylight' centres across the country, but for eight days over the Christmas period, they open an additional ten (last year - nine) specialist centres around London. The buildings that house these four residential and six day centres are donated for Crisis' use, stocked by generous donations and manned and managed by 8,000+ volunteers who donate their time and energy to support up to 3,000 homeless and vulnerably-housed guests.[/p][p]For eight days and nights we provide beds at the residential centres for the most vulnerable, but 'beds' is just the headline; our guests get somewhere to sleep that is warm and safe, allowing up to eight uninterrupted nights' sleep for many of them for the first time in months. A week's worth of three square meals a day and good sleeps. Just imagine for a moment what that does to a person's energy and clarity of thought...[/p][p]As well as food and somewhere safe to sleep, our guests get access to health checks, clothing, showers, a shave, haircuts, computers, advice about housing and jobs, as well as lasting help for those with addictions and mental health difficulties. And we provide a chat and some company and a cuppa with some biscuits, and some arty stuff to do and some games to play and books to read and movies to watch and some music and some silly hats... and 3,000 guests get to have a Christmas.[/p][p]This will be my fifth year as a General Volunteer and I have again signed up for all eight night shifts(!) between 22-30th December.[/p][lt]h3[gt]An Invitation to Match My Donation[lt]/h3[gt][p]Two years ago I decided to encourage those around me to donate money too, to help fund Crisis' delivery of more life-changing services and their campaigns for change. My first target was £467 which equated to paying me £5.84 per hour for my 80 hours. You all blew me away with your generosity and together we raised over £1,000. Last year I set a target of £500 (in line with the new minimum wage of £6.08) and together we again raised over double that - £1,012.50.[/p][p]I'd like to give my friends and family the opportunity to help again this year by donating their hard-won cashmoneyhardcurrency to help reach my new target of £520. If we raise this amount, it will fund space for more than 25 vulnerable adults this Christmas and equates to paying me UK minimum wage (£6.19) for each of the 84 hours I'll be volunteering.[/p][p]If you decide to give, you'll be matching my donation of time with a financial donation of your own. I'm hoping again that you will help me to double that, but everything you give in these penny-conscious times is incredibly gratefully received.[/p][lt]h3[gt]Volunteering[lt]/h3[gt][p]There is a saying amongst Crisis volunteers that "everyone has their reasons for volunteering". We all get something from the experience that is hard to find elsewhere, and we give our time in the knowledge that we are helping some of our society's most vulnerable people. And we also get to meet an incredibly varied and endlessly fascinating bunch of guests and volunteers, and make lasting friendships.[/p][p]If you want to find out more about volunteering yourself, visit http://www.crisis.org.uk/pages/volunteering-at-crisis-christmas.html. And even if you didn't donate here, just be nice to someone today when you wouldn't normally. :-)[/p][p]Wishing love, laughter and light for you all through the rest of December and into the new year ahead, and thanks again from me for reading this far, and from my fellow volunteers and guests.[/p][p] [/p][p]G.[/p][p]---[/p][p]Hi, thanks for visiting my page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p]One place at Crisis at Christmas provides...[/p][ul][li]A warm welcome and good company[/li][li]Three nutritious, hot meals, including Christmas dinner[/li][li]A chance to shower, freshen up and get clean clothes[/li][li]Health check and treatment from a doctor optician and dentist[/li][li]Advice on housing and employment[/li][li]Expert help with mental health and addiction problems[/li][li]Access to year-round services at Crisis Skylight[/li][/ul][p]Reserve a place today and you’ll be giving someone clean clothes, warmth and comfort. A proper health check, maybe some new glasses, decent shoes. And then there’s all the other help when Christmas is over, with housing, gaining skills and finding work – wherever someone is right now, Crisis will help them get to the next step . One more step out of homelessness.[/p]
