My story

[p]Sponsor my 90 Hours Volunteering & Reserve 26 places for my 10th Year at Crisis Xmas [/p][p]I know many of you recognise this fundraiser page by now, and are ready to click on the [Donate] button - it's up there on the right in red. Go ahead, lovelies. Clickety Click.[/p][p]But as it's my 10th year at Crisis Xmas, I've given myself permission to prattle on a bit more than usual - I know some of you enjoy reading my rambling words and like to look for typos), and you lot can hit the [Read More] button to scroll down and keep reading. [/p][p]Whether you donate here today or not, I'm wishing love, light and laughter for you all through the rest of December and into the new year ahead, and thanks again from me, from my fellow Crisis volunteers, and from our Christmas guests for visiting this page. And if you didn't donate today, how about being a bit extra-nice to someone today when you wouldn't normally. :-)[/p][p]Much love from here. G.xx[/p][p][/p][p]Well, just take a look at that cheery bunch![/p][p]This photo was taken last Christmas outside our centre, I think at around 4am. There's some first-time volunteers in there and some old-hands, some Brits and some foreign-born, some properly-dressed for a 4am outdoor rotation and some less-prepared (they're all wearing comfortable footwear though, because we're nothing if not practical on nightshift!)[/p][p]A decade comes around quickly, and this will be my tenth year as a Christmas Nightshift Volunteer, and as it (rapidly!) approaches I've been reflecting on Crisis Christmases-Past, and remembering some of the smiles, support, practical help and companionship we've provided to each other as we've in-turn provided support for Crisis' homeless guests - for 50 years, since 1967.[/p][p]To date (before CC 2017 begins) I've volunteered on 70 shifts across 4 centres and 3 teams, in dozens of roles and with thousands of co-volunteers... and through all of that, I've never felt alone or unsupported for long. And you've been part of those teams too - you've supported me without hesitation in word and deed and donation (over £12,000 donated in my name in the 7 years I've been fundraising, raised to help support Crisis' work during the Christmas project and throughout the year). Let's just take a moment for that....[/p][p]!!! YOU'VE ALREADY RAISED OVER TWELVE THOUSAND POUNDS FOR CRISIS !!![/p][p]Whether part of the neighbourhood litter and security patrol, the welcome team at centre entrance, or the cafeteria crew keeping hot and cold drinks flowing; Watching over a sleeping dormitory or some particularly vulnerable guests, keeping showers and toilets clean and stocked, or managing the luggage stores or computer suite; Debating the Premier League with a guest or playing games and completing jigsaws with them, organising logistics or delivering someone to where they will best be helped, or deep-cleaning our wonderful donated buildings; Allocating and rotating 120+ volunteers to tasks through the night, manning the shift office, finding all the radio-holders at 5am for a battery-change, preparing and serving mid-shift meals for volunteers; Supporting first-aiders with medical issues (thankfully rare), evacuating into the 3am rain (even rarer), de-escalating situations with a smile or a cuppa or a chat, or just letting somebody speak and actually listening to them...[/p][p]Each shift is full of mickey-taking and genuine compassion, there are stupid antler hats, Christmas onesies and sparkly tinselly leggings, home-made brownies and biscuits and boxes of clementines, hundreds of stairs and comparing fitbit miles; there are infantile games and guess-the-day-job, and blu-tack model-making to keep each other awake when the mid-week night-shift jet-lag kicks in, and perfectly-timed hugs because you weren't quite prepared for what a guest just shared with you. And there is hard work and serious conversations about life and love and work and music and literature and humanity and politics and philosophy and how best to wipe down a urinal and how to make a cup of decent tea (milk should never be involved until the tea-bag is gone, for pity's sake!)[/p][p]And it changes all of our volunteers. An hour in the whistling rain and bitter cold isn't pleasant, but you don't complain as readily the next time you miss your night-bus. 90 minutes spent cleaning toilets and showers isn't glamorous, but it leaves you disappointed with the standards in every fast food bathroom you'll ever go to. A rotation spent buddied with a stranger turns you into compadres, and some compadres become friends, and the standards you expect of all of your friends rises. And your expectations of yourself rise, too.[/p][p]You become personally aware that many hands do make light work and have taken an active part in making something hugely complex seem easy. And through your heartbreak, you give a smile to that guy outside the tube station. And through your cynicism, you tweet at your MP and they respond. And you share a petition on Facebook, and your friends share it too. And you all add your signatures to it, and the law changes. And you decide to fundraise a bit, and your friends blow you away with their generosity, and you love your friends a little more. And they boost you and support you and get interested in our homelessness scandal, asking questions and educating themselves and in some (I'm incredibly proud of you!) cases volunteering or fundraising themselves.[/p][p][br][/p][p]This Year's Fundraising - £680 Target - Sponsor to match my 90 Hours Volunteering [/p][p]Over the past seven Christmases, you have raised £12,347.23 in my name to help support Crisis' work during the Christmas project and throughout the year.[/p][p]!!! YOU'VE ALREADY RAISED OVER TWELVE THOUSAND POUNDS FOR CRISIS !!![/p][p]As has become traditional, I am generously and selflessly giving my friends and family the opportunity to get involved again, and give away their hard-earned cash-money.[/p][p]I've once again calculated our fundraising target in line with matching my donated hours at Minimum Wage (falsely rebranded last year as a 'Living Wage'). This year that's 90 hours at £7.50 which gives us a target of £680 and will fund spaces for more than 26 vulnerable adults this Christmas.[/p][p]If you feel you want to and are able, I’d be incredibly proud if you made a donation here at www.virginmoneygiving.com/georgelondon.[/p][p]And please, DON'T FORGET TO TICK THE GIFT AID BOX! £1,884 of what we've raised together over the past 7 years has come from people clicking on that box. You can do this and still remain anonymous to me if you want to, and the UK government will give an extra 25% to Crisis - effectively donating the income tax you've already paid to them and making your donation count for even more. *6[/p][p][br][/p][p]How much should you sponsor?[/p][p]The short answer is, 'however much you feel comfortable with' (but remember to tick the GIFT AID box, and it's like tipping me 25%!)[/p][p]It helps sometimes to equate your donation with something specific, so below are some examples;[/p][p]£6.00 + Gift Aid (= £7.50 ) matches ONE HOUR of my volunteering at the UK National Wage level)[/p][p]£20.86 + Gift Aid (= £26.08 ) reserves ONE PLACE at Crisis at Christmas[/p][p]£41.73 + Gift Aid (= £52.16 ) reserves TWO PLACES at Crisis at Christmas[/p][p]£67.50 + Gift Aid (= £84.38 ) matches me volunteering for ONE NIGHTSHIFT at the UK National Wage level)[/p][p]£104.32 + Gift Aid (= £130.40 ) reserves TABLE FOR 5 at Crisis at Christmas[/p][p]£208.64 + Gift Aid (= £260.80 ) reserves a TABLE FOR 10 at Crisis at Christmas[/p][p]£540.00 + Gift Aid (= £675.00 ) matches volunteering for all EIGHT NIGHTSHIFTS at the UK National Wage level)[/p][p]£630.00 + Gift Aid (= £787.50 ) matches volunteering for all EIGHT NIGHTSHIFTS at the (non-London) UK Living Wage level *7)[/p][p]£734.40 + Gift Aid (= £918.00 ) matches volunteering for all EIGHT NIGHTSHIFTS at the London Living Wage level *7)[/p][p][br][/p][p]Want to Volunteer?[/p][p]It's not too late if you want to find out more about volunteering yourself - click through to www.crisis.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer or ask me for more info. I guarantee that the experience will benefit both you and many others, which is what's known as a win-win![/p][p]If you're trying to decide which centre and which shift to join, I can highly recommend Night-Shifts at the Outreach Rough Sleeper’s Centre in Paddington! ;-)[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank You For Reading! [/p][p][br][/p][p]Wishing love, light and laughter for you all through the rest of December and into the new year ahead, and thanks again from me and from my fellow volunteers and guests for reading this far.
