My story

[p] I’m running a half-marathon. I’ve written it now and published it, so there’s no going back….gulp.[/p][p]Without fail I was the child finishing last at Sports Day, albeit getting the biggest cheer (well that’s the perk according to Mum). Forty years later I’m taking on my longest ever race and although the cheers might help, what will be powering me around the thirteen point one miles is Liberty’s Legacy.[/p][p]I'm running in memory of the vibrant Liberty Schurer. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Liberty loved to dance and perform. [/p][p]Liberty had a great set of friends. [/p][p]Liberty embraced life at her all-girls secondary school. [/p][p][br][/p][p]It sounds so remarkably similar to my daughter and many of her friends. Which is what made the news of Liberty’s illness resonate with me.[/p][p]I had watched as my father-in-law battled with cancer of leg bone. It seemed so very cruel that this disease struck at another member of our family and someone so young. Liberty had Ewings Sarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of bone cancer for which survival rates have sadly not improved in over 30 years and treatment protocols remain decades old. Upon discovering that her prognosis was terminal, Liberty's greatest wish was that funds should be raised in her name for vital research into this cruel disease. She did not want any other child to suffer as she had, nor any other family to be ripped apart in the same way. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Liberty celebrated her fourteenth birthday shortly before gaining her angel wings. [/p][p][br][/p][p]I’ve read lots of people’s memories of Liberty and one word shines out – SMILE. So, I will be embracing Liberty’s spirit and fixing a smile to my face as I run for her.[/p][p]My smile will be considerably larger, brighter and more dazzling if I knew that my run would be raising money for Liberty’s Legacy and Bone Cancer Research, so I ask you to sponser me. [/p][p]I run for Liberty's Legacy.[/p][p][br][/p]
