My story

[p]Back in February 2020, I was injured - having physio for an injury sustained in August 2019. Increasingly frustrated over time, I reached a point where I decided that I needed a goal. [/p][p]Early in March, things started to click and one evening I spent 5 minutes gently jogging on a treadmill. That's all it was, but it was my breakthrough. I went home that night and announced to my dumbstruck wife that I was going to run a half marathon, and that I was doing this to raise money for Shelter. For most people, something like this doesn't come as a huge shock, but for me it did. Why? I'd never been a runner and am closing in on 50 years old! So I trained, started very slowly and just as I started enjoying this new hobby, the run was cancelled due to COVID-19. I did complete a half marathon and did this virtually on the day through - 6 months of effort were not going out of the window, especially when I was trying to raise money for a wonderful charity. I documented my journey at www.thegreatnorthrunadventure.com if you fancy reading about how I did it. Every now and again, I go back to it and remind myself how far I came in a short space of time![/p][p]However, nothing beats actually doing an event, so I am told, so my friends at Shelter agreed to keep me in the team for 2021, so here I go again. Training hard, capturing the journey on INSTAGRAM and trying to do my best to make a difference.[/p][p]In the modern era, homelessness 'shouldn't happen'. Yet every time I visit a town, or city, there are more and more people living (and dying) on the streets. As much as buying a coffee or hot meal for people can and does help, I know that we physically cannot help every person we encounter who lives in such destitution. Realising this made me think of a way in which I can help and Shelter as an organisation are one I am proud to support. They help around 170,000 people per year to get back on their feet, to find and keep their homes. They also tackle the root causes of our housing crisis by campaigning for new laws, policies and solutions. As a charity, Shelter rely upon the donations from the public and this is where you come in![/p][p]Thanks for visiting the page.[/p]
