My story

July 13th - 22nd

Green Ribbon Week 2010,

Raising money for children of war

Green Ribbon Week is an annual fundraising

initiative launched to raise awareness of the plight

of children living in war-torn regions

WHY? I saw an ad for this event and immediately it caught my eye. As many of you know I have a daughter named Zainab, born in September last year. The feelings I have experienced as a father are indescribable and this warm glow within my heart continues to grow day by day. I embrace her every milestone... her first smile, her first wave, her first giggle and her first word. Knowing she’ll be there when I walk in from work looking at me with her smile which lights up her whole face... just makes everyday feel that much more special. I’m fortunate I have Zainab, i’m fortunate to know she’s safe. Living in cotton wool we often take life for granted and forget the suffering around the world. War goes on and many innocent children get left orphaned, disabled, emotionally scarred but worst of all dead. This was a cause worth every mile.

INSPIRATION: From a young age I have wanted to pursue my love for sports. Finally I have a fantastic job working in a school Teaching PE and running holiday camps for Fit for Sport promoting health and fitness in our youth. My main inspiration was my late father Mazhar Ul-haq Khan, whom I miss dearly. My father came to the UK in 1948, he was an Olympic Athlete. He came from Pakistan to compete in the 100 Meter hurdles for the London Winter Olympics 1948. He was an admirable man with an amazing life, he achieved some wonderful things. If my father was alive to see me climb Mount Kilimanjaro this year for such an amazing cause, it would make him proud.

Also my father-in-law now retired, came from Kenya to the UK in 1968. He returned to Tanzania the following year and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. His story is also an inspiration.

THE TREK: We’ve all read tales of faraway lands, distant cultures and awe-inspiring adventures. I am taking one such adventure to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. I will be combining the challenge of climbing the highest free standing mountain in the world with a wonderful cause – helping children in war torn areas around the world. Rising almost 20,000 feet, Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and, for this, has been nicknamed ‘the roof of Africa’. Set across the stunning Serengeti plains, I can expect to encounter anything from rainforests, moorland, alpine desert and glaciers. I will depart on the 13th of July and return on the 22nd of July 2010.

I sincerely apologise as some of the photographs may upset you.

However this is what we forget.

PLEASE PLEASE DONATE GENOUROSLY!!!

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed direct to the charity. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
