Team story

[lt]h1 style="text-align: center;"[gt][span=background-color: #ffffff;][lt]span style="color: #0000ff;"[gt]Hi Everyone![/span][lt]/span[gt][lt]/h1[gt][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt] After a few glasses of wine back in October, it seemed like a wise idea to enter our first (and possibly last!) marathon…six months, one spleen (oopsie, slight skiing accident!) and some shin splints later and the marathon is looming ever closer.  Luckily, I somehow managed to get Sam to agree to join me, and together on Sunday 26[sup]th[/sup]May we are running the Edinburgh marathon. We have been training through ice, snow, wind, rain and the occasional sunny spell, but we’re still a fair way off from being able to run 26 miles in one go!...and here is the reason why we’re putting ourselves through this…[/p][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt]  For those of you who aren’t aware, I work as a nurse, and with a group of paramedics and RAF cadets we flew to Kenya last year with the charity Patchworking Against Poverty to undertake both medical and manual voluntary work.  The charity started out in a slum in Nairobi called Kawangare providing improvements to an orphanage and a medical clinic and buying new equipment for the clinic.  We then went to an area called Kisii and provided the locals with a free medical camp, visiting and setting up the camp at a different location every day for six days.  Whilst at the camp we managed to re-home and find sponsorship for five orphans, who thanks to the charity are now able to sleep in a bed, have a meal every day and attend school. One of the children we sponsored is called Brian.   Brian suffers with Polio and unfortunately is unable to walk.  He currently has to be carried everywhere he goes as he does not have a wheelchair.  We will be returning and visiting the children this year and hope to raise enough money for Brian to have a new wheelchair so he will have his independence.[/p][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt]I can personally assure you that every single penny donated to the charity gets spent on people in Kenya who really need it.  The charity strictly does not charge any admin whatsoever and every volunteer has to pay for their own flights and accommodation etc.[/p][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt]I appreciate in the current economic climate that spare cash is few and far between, but any donation goes such a long way in Kenya.[/p][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt]Please visit the website for more information and to see the work that was carried out last year, and what we’re hoping to achieve this year.[/p][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt]www.patchworkingagainstpoverty.org[/p][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt]So, while you’re sat having a well-deserved lazy Sunday morning, please give a little thought to us setting out on another ridiculously long and time consuming training run, aaaaaargh! No pain, no gain![/p][lt]p style="text-align: center;"[gt]THANK YOU![/p][lt]h2 style="text-align: center;"[gt][span=color: #0000ff;]Holly & Sam[/span][lt]/h2[gt]
