Team story

[p]This is a charity that iTS Leadership have supported for a couple of years and this year, members of our team will be doing the Victoria to Chatham 50km walk in October. [/p][p]The following is a statement from the Director, Liz Shaw, which provides information on this much needed charitable cause:[/p][p]"As the "lockdown" began, we were coming to the end of our Homeless Emergency Winter Refuge (which had provided nearly 1000 beds to rough sleepers in Medway) when the government announced people could no longer share sleeping spaces - Medway Council approached us with a plan to partly "take over" a local hotel to accommodate people, where One Big Family would provide 24/7 on site support to "guests". A small team of volunteers then undertook the challenge of trying to keep people "indoors" (as per guidlines), whilst attempting to support them with any underlying issues (substance misuse/mental & physical health) and provide emotional support, during a very anxious time..... as you can imagine we had many challenging issues along the way - not least suspected cases of Covid, but I am very proud of the way these were overcome.[/p][p]We managed to persuade other local charities to support us with food, plus got some statutory services to assist with rapid referrals, and housing support - the local "homeless sector" response was amazing![/p][p]All guests had access to clean clothiing, toiletries food, books, puzzles, craft items etc..[/p][p]For 14 weeks we remained on site - in some areas of the country up to 40% of people who were given this type of emergency accomodation vacated due to lack of added support, NO ONE left our hotel for that reason![/p][p]I am extremely pleased to say, due to wonderful collaborative working, the vast majority of guests have now moved on to more permanent housing.....[/p][p]Another "arm" of One Big Family responded to the HUGE demand for food parcels - as the supermarket shelves emptied, and people were isolated, we were inundated with requests for food parcels from Social services, supported housing providers, probation etc... during the 6 weeks of the pandemic, we sent out over 700 parcels plus essentials to people in crisis.... Our stocks ran dangerously low at times, coupled with the issue of us being unable to "bulk buy", but the local community (and our wonderful volunteers) rallied and seemingly "the universe provided" at crucial moments.... as time progressed, other services mobilised and lessened our load, but we continue to distribute food to nearly 200 people per month.[/p][p]Throughout the entire time, our weekly Soup Kitchen continued - using strict "social distancing" guidelines, and operating a "collect and go" service... at the height of the crisis, over 100 people were attending every Sunday - our volunteer cooks, did an amazing job creating delicious home-cooked meals, plus desserts and treats! (We are still seeing 70 people weekly).[/p][p]The latest Government guidelines indicate that we will be unable to run the Homeless refuge this year, therefore we will be working very closely with Medway Council to find solutions for rough sleepers during the Winter months... however, we have recently taken on a new "Interim supported Housing" project in Chatham, which is very new, and extremely exciting..... feel free to come and visit!"[/p]
