Team story

[p]We’re cycling, swimming and running to raise funds for charities that cared for Imre and looked after us all, when he was born last summer with a complex congenital heart defect.[/p] [p]£7000 raised! [/p] [p]On Saturday 1 July we cycled 100k overnight for Nightrider in Bristol; on Sunday 16 July we swam 2.5k open water from Pier to Pier in Bournemouth; and this Sunday 17 September Team Imre tackled the Great Bristol Half Marathon.[/p] [p]We've been raising funds for the British Heart Foundation and The Grand Appeal - the charity linked to Bristol Children's Hospital - and thanks to your generosity have smashed our fundraising targets to raise more than £7000! [/p] [p]Imre's story[/p] [p]At a 20-week pregnancy scan we found out Imre had Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA). His heart hadn’t developed correctly. The bit that lead off the heart to pump oxygenated blood around the body (the aorta) and the bit that heads off to the lungs with unoxygenated blood (the pulmonary artery) were the wrong way around. TGA is pretty rare and without quick medical interventions you can’t live.[/p] [p]And so, at just 10 days old, after spending his first week monitored and wired up, brave little Imre underwent a massive, life-saving, 10-hour operation. A truly amazing surgical team replumbed his heart, not just switching his aorta and pulmonary artery back to their correct place but patching a hole between his ventricles.[/p] [p]Known as an arterial switch operation this was only pioneered in the late 80s and 90s. It means that kids born today with this condition have a better chance of survival with fewer interventions. It is a real feat in medical science and testament to the incredible talents of those who perform heart surgery, especially on kids.[/p] [p]Thanks to the fantastic staff at the Bristol Children's Hospital, Imre's recovery was remarkable. Just a month after he was born he came home with us. He's continued to thrive ever since, has just celebrated his first birthday and has just passed his latest check-up.[/p] [p]Imre will sport an impressive scar - a story for life - and will have regular check-ups for ever, but we know he's in good hands. We couldn’t imagine life without our little hero who surprises and delights us every day.[/p] [p]Here's a few photos of his journey so far.[/p] [p]Please dig deep[/p] [p]When we found out about Imre's condition our world was turned upside down. It really was thanks to these charities and our incredible NHS that we made it through.[/p] [p]Thanks for your support and encouragement! [/p][span=font-size: 12.96px;][lt]span style="font-weight: normal;"[gt] [/span][lt]/span[gt]
