My story

[p]As many of you know, in April of 2020 malignant melanoma cancer was discovered on the top of my head and was successfully removed. The operation went so well that no radiation or chemo was necessary as the surgeon removed all the cancer cells. I was back to my normal self (“Jack normal”) within two days after surgery. Since that time I have run three half marathons, two full marathons and logged over 500 peloton rides.[/p][p]The first two years following melanoma surgery are the highest risk period for a return of the cancer. About a month ago I noticed a small lump on my neck in the area of the lymph nodes and immediately contacted my surgeon. A biopsy was taken and it was determined that the cancer has returned. After a full body PET scan and an MRI, we were relieved to learn that the cancer has not spread and was isolated to just the single lump area.[/p][p]There is so much good news here so read on, as I’m excited to be moving forward in a positive fashion.[/p][p]The treatment moving forward will allow me to live my life as I always have, “all in.” No chemo, no radiation. I will be wiping out this isolated cancer appearance (and at the same time treating the rest of my body should any cancers think about treading on my turf) with a drug referred by many top medical people as a “miracle drug” called Keytruda. I had a consult with the oncologist and my first infusion of Keytruda on Tuesday July 6 and had absolutely no side effects. The oncologist told me I have a “special marker” which indicates I will respond well to the infusions.[/p][p]The Keytruda treatments will be administered every six weeks for a one year period, and entail about three hours for each infusion. Patient reactions to this relatively new drug have been quite minimal in nature, and the doctors don’t anticipate any significant reactions on my part, given my excellent physical condition. They have greenlighted me for my travel and racing schedule, which includes a marathon in September, October and November (for marathon #100 in Athens, Greece). Plus I am excited to be delivering an in person presentation next week in St. Louis and am excited to have other in-person speaking engagements planned for the balance of 2021 and into 2022. Looking to add more![/p][p]Cancer has been no friend to my immediate family. I lost Bonnie, my wife of 47 years, to pancreatic cancer in 2017. My daughter Melissa is now seven years cancer free after her bout with colon cancer. And now me as described above. As a world, we need to find the cure to cancer. I am honored to have been selected to run the London Marathon sponsored by a well-known charity CANCERactive!. It’s serendipitous that I was supposed to run this marathon in 2020, but due to the pandemic, it was pushed back to October 2021. Now, in the midst of my own cancer treatment, it is especially meaningful to be asking my friends and colleagues to donate on my behalf for this run.[/p][p]To that end, I am looking forward to running my 99th marathon on October 3 in the Virgin Money London Marathon and I’m asking for your support by donating on my behalf to CANCERactive!. Thanks for your support![/p][p]Onward and upward![/p]
