My story

[p] Thank you for visiting my page[/p][p] I thought I would give you a little bit of information about the challenge and how it came about. I started running in 2012 having seen a friend complete London Marathon - prior to that whilst I had played sport I had vowed never to run - how things change! Having seen my friend run London Marathon I entered Royal Parks half marathon - I completed it, its a beautiful course but I hated every moment of the training. Fast forward a few years and I had given myself a goal of completing 1 marathon before I was 30. I found myself anxiously standing at the start line of New York Marathon 7 days before my 30th thinking that would be the one and only marathon I would run. New York was an incredible albeit painful experience and when I crossed the finish line I swore I would never do it again. [/p][p] You may therefore ask why I am now running 10 marathons in 10 countries - and the answer is I am not sure. Having completed New York I said that I would consider running London Marathon at some point and this developed into 10 marathons, 10 countries to raise money for 2 great charities. [/p][p] I am now nearly at the end of the challenge having run 9 marathons and 1 to go at the end of May (see the list below for the marathons I have run. [/p][p] It has not been an easy journey and there have been a few injuries along the way but as those that know me will tell you I can be very stubborn and once I had committed to the challenge I was not going to let the charities down. [/p][p] I raised £3,069.03 (plus £648.25 gift aid) for the National Association of People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC) in completing New York marathon. Having extended the challenge to 10 marathons I extended the target to £10,000.00 and whilst continuing to raise money for NAPAC I decided to include another great charity - Wheelpower too. [/p][p] NAPAC offer support to those abused in childhood, they run a telephone support line, have a website full of resources for survivors and regular campaign and speak out about issues relating to survivors of abuse. More information can be found on their website https://napac.org.uk/ [/p][p] Wheelpower are dedicated to providing opportunities for disabled people to find a sport they enjoy and provide opportunities to introduce people to wheelchair support over the year – their work can help with confidence and sport can help with both physical an psychological symptoms. Wheelpower have contributed to the rise in the number of disabled people playing sport. More information is on their website http://www.wheelpower.org.uk [/p][p] Alongside the running I also arranged a black tie charity ball in October 2019 which helped me to reach my original target of £10,000.00. However I have increased that target to £15,000(including gift aid) and if I hit it I will run the final marathon in Edinburgh in fancy dress as Wonder Woman which must be worth a £ or so and I have also given up alcohol for the final month. [/p][p] Thank you for reading my story and please help me support these 2 wonderful charities that I am so proud to be fundraising for. You can find more information about my challenge and follow my journey on my instagram account @10marathons10countries[/p][p] Please note that I have funded the cost of all marathons and travel costs myself so all donations will go to the charities. [/p][p] Thank you [/p][p] Jess x[/p][p] November 2015 - New York [/p][p] October 2016 - Dublin[/p][p] April 2017 - London[/p][p] September 2017 - Berlin[/p][p] November 2017 - Florence[/p][p] March 2018 - Barcelona [/p][p] April 2018 - Vienna[/p][p] May 2018 - Edinburgh (had to withdraw due to injury) [/p][p] October 2018 - Budapest[/p][p] April 2019- Paris[/p][p] May 2019 – Edinburgh [/p][p] ********* UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2017*******[/p][p] I managed to complete London but it was a tough course. As I write this I will taking on taking on marathon #4 in Berlin. I am feeling very nervous about this one. Thank you for all your sponsorship so far - it really does help to keep me running. However I still have a long way to go to meet my target and another 7 marathons to run so please dig deep and sponsor me as much as you can. [/p][p] *****December 2017 update - halfway through*******[/p][p] After a tough run in London I had an even harder time in Berlin - hitting the wall just over halfway. Despite the difficulties I managed to complete the run, seeing my parents 3 times throughout the course was a great motivator and Berlin was lovely despite the rain. After 2 difficult runs I have revisited my training and energy gels and prepared myself for the last marathon of 2017 in Florence. [/p][p] I thought Berlin had been wet but the first half of Florence was torrential rain. I took a slightly more relaxed approach to this marathon which paid off as I got a PB for 2017 - 7 minutes quicker than London & Berlin. Let’s hope that continues for the next 5! [/p][p] Next stop is Barcelona and I am so proud with my friend Jo Vizard who not only is running her first marathon with me but is also donating her sponsorship to the same cause. I know she isn't so excited for the marathon but I can't wait to see her cross the finish line in Barcelona! Please dig deep to sponsor us![/p][p] No time to rest after Barcelona with Vienna in April and Edinburgh in May. I am also planning a black tie charity dinner in October next year - more details to follow. [/p][p] Barcelona 11/3/18[/p][p] Vienna 22/4/18[/p][p] Edinburgh 26/5/18[/p][p] Once again thank you to everyone for your sponsorship and support - it means a lot :) [/p][p] ****APRIL 2018 UPDATE****[/p][p] A massive thank you to Jo who has raised £1515 with gift aid which she has donated towards the £10,000.00 target. Just 3 more marathons to go![/p][p] *****OCTOBER 2018 UPDATE****[/p][p] I made it through Vienna but only just having been diagnosed with either a possible stress fracture or at very least stress reaction, once I returned it was confirmed that I did have a stress fracture and as a result had to make the difficult decision to withdraw from Edinburgh. After a long 3 weeks in an air cast boot I spent the next few months working hard on my recovery and trying to get as strong as possible before getting back to running. [/p][p] It wasn't always an easy road back to running but I am pleased to say that I have now completed marathon #8 in Budapest - my goal was to get through this marathon without any further injuries and not only did I do that but I got my PB of 04:20:40 - I had hoped to get one marathon sub 04.30 so I am happy with that![/p][p] The next goal is to host the 10 marathons charity ball on 27th October in Tunbridge Wells. tickets are £75.00 and include a drinks reception, canapes, 3 course meal and entertainment. If you would like to come please do let me know. After that the focus will be on the final 2 marathons which are likely to be Paris in April and then returning to a second time to Edinburgh to complete the 10. [/p][p] UPDATE FEBRUARY 2019[/p][p] Sorry for the slow update but a huge thank you to everyone that attended the ball, it was a huge success with over £5200.00 raised as a result of ticket sales and the generosity of everyone during the raffle and auction. More details and photos are on my Instagram page. [/p][p] I had aimed to reach £10,000.00 but am now hoping to reach £15,000.00 in the final few months of the challenge. I have booked the last 2 marathons with Paris in April and Edinburgh in May and can't quite believe that after 4 years of marathon training the challenge is almost coming to an end. [/p][p] A big thank you to everyone that has supported and donated so far - I really do appreciate all your support in helping me get to the £10,000.00 target. For those that haven't its not too late and your sponsorship will help me continue to stay motivated through the last 2 marathons :) [/p][p] MAY 2019 UPDATE[/p][p] I can’t quite believe that there are only 3 weeks of this challenge left. After the PB in Budapest and the successful ball I decided to put everything into my training for Paris Marathon. I worked hard for 14 weeks with interval training, painful sports massages and long runs in all weather conditions. I was determined to give it everything in Paris and even getting a cold 3 days before wasn’t going to stop me. The weather in Paris was perfect and I had what I thought was an achievable goal of 4:15 and a dream goal of 4:10. The course was beautiful and very well supported – not least by my parents who once again came out to cheer me on at multiple points and I am proud to say I hit my PB of 4:10:08[/p][p] I now have just one marathon left in 3 weeks and if I hit £15,000 (including gift aid) will be running as wonder woman and have added to the challenge by giving up alcohol for the final month. [/p][p] A huge thank you to everyone that has supported me so far and if you can give a few more £s - both the charities and I would be very grateful.
