My story

[p][img][/img]Hi, thanks for visiting my page and donating to Mind Body EDS (www.mindbodyeds.org.uk). This new charity is dedicated to increasing support and awareness of Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS), a potentially life-threatening but little-understood connective tissue disorder affecting a huge number of sufferers of all ages. There is no cure for EDS. A delay to diagnosis causes unnecessary suffering, irreversible damages to the body that could potentially cause disabling and life-threatening complications. That is why an early diagnosis is paramount.[/p][p]Every penny counts and we appreciate your support and time in making the donation. Virgin Money is a not for profit organisation and your gift will pass through to Mind Body EDS after the end of the London Marathon... hopefully with me crossing the finishing line! [/p][p]Laura’s story [/p][p]Mind Body EDS founder Laura Sylvester, 26, first showed symptoms as a very young teenager, but it took more than ten years for her condition to be properly diagnosed. [/p][p]By this time she had just weeks to live and had to fly to the USA for urgent specialist neurosurgery. Though successful, she has since had to undergo several more costly life-saving operations. [/p][p]Her story is far from unique. Like so many EDS sufferers, because her symptoms went unrecognised for so many years her condition became life-threatening. “Early diagnosis really does save lives,” she says. “So in setting up Mind Body EDS our goal is to help others get the right treatment as soon as possible.” [/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MKWvSTroVBs?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo][p] [/p][p]John’s story[/p][p]UK-born and with a PhD in Physics from Sussex University, John Thompson, 55, is now resident in the US and works in the Oil & Gas industry. [/p][p]Out of office hours he has led an exceptionally energetic outdoor lifestyle and recently started running trail, track and road races from 5km to 24-hour endurance events. A natural competitor, in 2017 he won a series of races at Seniors level, including a Grand Slam of gold medals at the Run Houston Race Series (winning all five races in course record times), and also winning the USATF Gulf Coast Region Grand Prix Series.[/p][p]Always setting new targets for himself, at the 2019 London Marathon his goal is to be in the top-three USA-based runners in his age group. At the same time he is “delighted to be able to help raise the profile of Laura’s extraordinary new charity, which has immediately hit the ground running in helping those like her who are suffering with this hugely-debilitating illness.” [/p][p]You can make a difference![/p][p]By supporting John in the London Marathon, your contribution will make a real and immediate difference in providing practical support for EDS sufferers. [/p][p]How can you help? Sufferers have a wide range of urgent needs, including [/p][p]· Providing an accurate and early diagnosis of EDS (there are 13 sub-types) by the few UK specialists who are able to recognise, treat and manage the condition [/p][p]· Access to often expensive and scarce medical resources such as upright MRI scans[/p][p]· Mobility support such as wheelchairs and car adaptions[/p][p]· Surgical procedures and other related medical support [/p][p]· Transport and accommodation costs for specialist medical treatment, both in the UK and abroad[/p][p]Mind Body EDS has just started its own marathon journey in providing valuable financial assistance in these and many other ways. So please join us - we know that any donation, large or small, will help provide a ‘gateway of hope’ for all those still waiting for the right diagnosis and treatment.[/p][p][/p][p]What is Mind Body EDS? [/p][p]Like Laura, today EDS sufferers and their families face huge financial and emotional burdens in achieving effective recognition, diagnosis and treatment of often chronic and wide-ranging symptoms.[/p][p]The goals behind Mind Body EDS are therefore both simple and powerful. As well as providing financial support to individuals, the charity aims to increase awareness among both the public and medical community of this group of life-altering and potentially fatal conditions affecting the body’s connective tissue.
