Team story

[p]Hello and thank you for visiting our fund raising page.[/p][p]In January 2016 our world was turned upside down when John was diagnosed with oesphogeal cancer.  That scuppered our plans to run the London Marathon together as John underwent chemotherapy treatment.  Later in the year he had surgery to remove his oesophagus.[/p][p]Having deferred his place we are hoping to run this year's London Marathon together but as John will be undergoing radiotherapy and further chemotherapy in April we may be walking more than running![/p][p]Since the beginning of last year we have received outstanding medical and patient care from University Hospital Southampton.  John's surgeon is a trustee of Heartburn Cancer UK and through this link we have more clearly understood more about this type cancer and how early intervention is critical to effective treatment.[/p][p]Heartburn Cancer UK is a charity devoted to raising awareness of this diesase both to the public and to medical professionals, aiming to reduce the proportion of cancers presenting at an incurable stage (currently 80%) and provide support to patients with the disease.  [/p][p]Given that this disease often begins with quite innocuous symptoms either indigestion and/or heartburn it has usually taken a significant hold by the time swallowing difficulties emerge.  At this stage treatment options are reduced if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.  Supporting Heartburn Cancer UK will help to reduce the number of patients that fall into this category - something we fully endorse.[/p][p]You can find out more about Heartburn Cancer UK at -http://www.heartburncanceruk.org/about.html and read John's blog at - http://www.heartburncanceruk.org/johnchrissy.html.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
